Spring Break in NYC

Spring break isn't far away. While many families will be heading to warm spots (Bermuda and Hawaii both beckon!), some prefer a sophisticated city vacation. So if you have heading to the Big Apple with tweens or teens in tow, here are some thoughts about what to see and do:
  1. Sure you can line up with hundreds of others to sit in the studio audience of one of the many TV shows taped in NYC. But how about getting a member in your family a starring role? On March 8 from 1-4 pm, Ralph Lauren Childrenswear and Teen Kids News will host a casting call to find the next Teen Kids News reporter at Bloomingdale's on 59th Street. Ralph Lauren Childrenswear will dress the winning newscaster for an upcoming segment that will air on Fox 5. It's open to kids ages 10-14 on a first-come first-served basis. Interested anchors must RSVP to TKNcastingcall@poloralphlauren.com to confirm their audition spot.
  2. Jazz up a trip to a NYC attraction like the Grand Central Terminal or Little Italy by making into a scavenger hunt or participate in a more organized scavenger hunt with Watson Adventures.
  3. New York has always played a big role on the big and little screen. See where fiction meets reality by taking a tour of TV and movie locations featured in shows filmed in New York. You'll walk past the doorsteps of your favorite television and movie characters and real-life celebrities.
  4. Go to the top of the Empire State Building or the Top of the Rock at night when crowds are lighter and the view is more spectacular.
  5. Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge (if the weather is nice).
  6. Ride the Staten Island Ferry and enjoy the views you'd get on the boat to the Statue of Liberty without the wait or expense.
  7. If you'll be in Chinatown for lunch or dinner, think about stopping at Chinatown Fair (8 Mott St. at Worth St.), which is full of martial-arts games plus a huge selection of dance games.
  8. Go to a Broadway show, take in some live music, or see a New York sports event like the Liberty, the women's basketball team.

Visit U.S. Royalty

If your travels take you to Hawaii, we recommend a stop at only royal palace in the United States: the Iolani Palace in Honolulu, completed in 1882 for Hawaiian king David Kalakaua. After getting a taste of the elegance and extravagance of European monarch's during a world tour just prior to his coronation, Kalakaua was determined to bestow his monarchy with similar pomp and circumstance. He ordered a pair of jewel-encrusted crowns for England and filled his palace with decorative items from England, France, India and Japan. He also wanted latest home technology, so the palace featured telephones, indoor plumbing, and electric lights (even before the White House did). In time, the Hawaiian monarchy was overthrown by a U.S.-backed coup. For a while the palace languished, but was restored in 1978 and now serves as a museum and a symbol of Hawaiian culture.

Need a Charger? Check the Lost & Found!

We all travel with a lot more electronic items than we used to. And of course, everything we take with us -- the indispensable cellphone, ipod, BlackBerry, and laptop -- needs a charger. Invariably, the charger gets separated from what it needs to charge. What to do when this happens while you are on the road? Check with the Hotel's Lost & Found Department. Most are full of cell phone chargers and most hotels are happy to let you borrow one.

More Vacation Photo Ideas

Taking wonderful photographs during your vacation is one thing. Finding a way to enjoy the fruits of your labors once you get back home is quite another. Sure you can print them out and create a photo album the old fashioned way. But now, thanks to the wonders of the web, there are more (and better) options:

Try animoto.com, which allows you to upload photos and a song to create a free 30-second video. All your friends, colleagues and relatives who would grown at the thought of paging through an album or slide show will be delighted with your cleverness (and brevity).

Or head over to picasa.com, which lets you add photos onto a google earth map. An annotated map that your pals can view online (or via email) at their leisure (and, again, for a brief time) is a great way to share the details of your trip in a friendly, rather than imposing, way.

More Vacation Photo Tips

Since we posted our last set of insider tips for vacation photos, we've thought of two more:
  1. When composing your shot, fill the frame with your subject instead of leaving lots of empty space around it. If you need to, move closer or zoom in.
  2. Experiment with different angles, including approaching subject from different directions and holding the both camera vertically and horizontally.

Insider Tips for Taking Great Vacation Photos

Photos make great souvenirs; here are our insider tips for how to make your vacation photos the best they can be.
  • Take lots of photos. Remember that it is often quantity that helps the pros achieve their quality -- they can use 20 rolls of film to find that perfect shot. For most of us, the easiest and most cost effective way to do this is with a digital camera. Don't forget to erase the images with closed eyes and cut-off heads so you'll have more room in your camera's memory for the good ones and won't have to download as often.
  • Learn all about your camera. Yes, we recommend that you read the manual. Sound boring? Maybe, but knowing all your camera's capabilities will help you choose the settings that are most appropriate to your situation. And you might pick up some extra tips, like dating your photos, that will come in handy.
  • Time it right. Outdoor lighting is perfect during what professionals call the "magic hours" -- right after dawn and just before sunset. For most people, there is more magic in the latter, but if you are travelling through time zones that make early mornings feasible (say from New York to Hawaii), you might also find that the peace and quiet inherent to this time of day makes framing the perfect shot easier. Noon is the worst time to take photos because the sunlight is too harsh (and is also likely to make your travel companions squint -- and who wants that in their photos?).
  • Light it right. The sun or indoor light source should always be behind you (the photographer), illuminating your subjects so they don't appear in silhouette. Worried that there isn't enough sun? Remember that on overcast days, the light is softer so there are no harsh shadows on the faces of your subjects.
  • Think of triangles. As you compose your shot, try to include subjects on three different levels. For example, if you are photographing three people, have one person standing, the second sitting, and the third person kneeling down in front. These different heights make the composition more interesting than lining people up in a row.

Snorkeling on Maui (Sponsored Post)

We're big proponents of the Hawaiian island of Maui: the volcanos that formed the "Valley Island" left a legacy of rich, arable land; as well as the spectacular, moon-like crater atop Mount Haleakala. There's a lot to do on Maui, too. Hiking or driving along the famed road to Hana are two of the best ways to appreciate the island's beauty, but golfing, whale watching, and relaxing on the beach are all good options, too.

But we run across many folks who can't imagine a trip to Maui (or, really, anyplace in Hawaii) without spending at least one day snorkeling. We are pleased to point such snorkeling fans toward the Pride of Maui, a 65-foot Maxi Power Catamaran, that takes passengers out on daily snorkeling adventures. With an expert captain and crew, 30 years in the business, and a reputation for superlative service, the "Pride of Maui" offers an ideal way to explore the underwater world that surrounds Maui. There are a variety of trips from which to choose: morning and afternoon snorkeling cruises, sunset cruises with live entertainment on board, whale watching cruises (especially wonderful at this time of year) and even a special Valentine's Day cruise! The "Pride of Maui" is also available for private charters.
