Imagine exploring a lush
tropical jungle with thousands of exotic
plants and flowers as well as waterfalls,
streams and waterlily lakes. Nestled in
the Onomea
Valley, surrounded
by the Pacific
Ocean and Hawaii’s
rugged volcanic hills, this nature
preserve and sanctuary is home to plants
collected throughout the tropics,
including gingers, bromeliads, ferns,
monkeypod trees and more than 200 species
of palm. These tropical plants share the
Garden with African flamingos, South
American macaws and other wildlife. The
Botanical Garden’s rather steep
price ($15 for adults) and out-of-the-way
location assure that the Garden is rarely
crowded, allowing you to enjoy its
natural beauty in a quiet and relaxing
manner.
Getting There
Hawaii Tropical
Botanical Garden is on the 4-mile
"scenic drive" on Route 19
between Honokaa and Hilo. If you are
coming from Honokaa, you will come to a
viewing area that overlooks Onomea Bay
about halfway along the road. Stop here
for your first glimpse of the Bay itself
and to get a glimpse of the beautiful
valley that houses the Botanical Garden.
One mile further, you will
come to the Garden registration office.
After registering and paying the
admission fee in the office, you will
board a mini-bus for a 5-minute ride to
the Garden. After you have viewed the
garden (on a self-guided tour), the van
will return you to the parking area. This
shuttle makes a trip from the
registration area to the Garden every 30
minutes.
