Lanai's
Top Sights
Lanai has some neat sights
worth checking out. Before you venture
out to any of these, make sure the roads
are not off limits to your rental
vehicle, which occasionally happens after
heavy rains have washed out parts if the
roads. Just as important, be sure to get
a map and the detailed directions booklet
available at the rental counter. Without
these aids, you may not find the sights.
Dont forget to bring
plenty of water and food for the day
since there are no convenience stores to
be found anywhere outside of tiny Lanai
City. At all times, be on the lookout for
the islands axis deer. The deer
population now stands at 6,000 so there
is a good chance you will spot a deer.
Where there are deer, there are hunters,
so you should definitely avoid the areas
that are designated as hunting grounds
during certain parts of the year (if you
stay on the roads, you will definitely be
OK).
Shipwreck
Beach
This sounds like a
ride at Disneyland, but it truly is what
it sounds like: a beach with
some large wrecked ships looming right
off the shore on a dangerous reef. The
beach is located on the northern side of
the island. The trip to the beach is just
as scenic as the beach itself because you
must first drive to the top of a steep
hill and then descend to the ocean, with
breathtaking views of
the ocean and the islands of Maui and
Molokai along the way.
The beach is not your
ordinary beach it stretches 8
miles along the coast of Lanai. If you
are willing to hike a little bit from
where the road ends, you can easily find
a secluded spot you can call your own for
much of the day. The currents here can be
strong, so proceed with caution if you go
into the water, which will not look very
appealing anyway because the currents
generally stir up the sand under the
water.
A short hike south of where
the road ends will bring you to the
Petroglyphs, which are ancient Hawaiian
rock drawings.
Garden
of The Gods
A lunar
looking collection of
natural red lava rock formations located
on the northwestern part of the island.
The rocks appear to change color
throughout the day as the sunlight hits
them from different angles. This was once
considered a sacred spot by island
residents, who built shrines to the gods
at this spot. Today, some visitors have
left behind their own "shrines."
Best time to visit is right before
sunset.
Munro Trail
A steep trail that
takes you to the highest point of Lanai
(elevation 3,370 feet). While on the
Munro trail, you will get great views of
the entire island and the uninhabited
island of Kahoolawe. If it is cloudy, you
may want to choose a different part of
the island to explore because the clouds
will obscure your views.
These are the most popular
sights. There are plenty of dirt roads
all over the island just waiting for you
to explore them. If you find any other
great spots on Lanai, please let
us know.
