        Harvard Museum of Natural History
26 Oxford Street
Cambridge
617-495-3045

The museum is actually made up of three different collections which share a common focus on the natural world and man's place in it. These collections were begun in the late 19th century, and reflect a preoccupation with systematic study and classification.

Museum of Comparative Zoology
Also known as the Agassiz Museum because of the sponsorship of Swiss zoologist Louis Agassiz, this collection systematically traces the evolution of humans and animals. Here is a factoid you won't find in any guidebook: specimens the museum does not have room for in Cambridge facility have been taken off-site to a former nuclear silo.

The Mineralogical and Geological Museum
This collection was founded in 1891 and features exotic crystals, meteorites, and models of volcanoes and the mountain ranges of the earth. Even if you don't believe in their New Age power, you'll feel better after you see these gorgeous treasures.

The Botanical Museum
We saved the best for last! Although this is a scholarly collection, focusing on the economics of plant use and culture, it is also home to Harvard's glass flower collection, which is housed in the Ware Collection of Glass Models of Plants. Some 3000 models were created by Leopold and Rudolph Blaschka, the father-and-son team who made the glass flowers. This collection is truly one of the wonders of Cambridge -- everything is so realistic that you won't believe it is made of glass.
