The 1620 Restaurant
158 Water Street
Plymouth
508-746-9565
Plymouth
abounds with eateries, both casual and
elegant. This charming corner restaurant
is right across the street from the Town
Wharf and offers a wealth of fresh
seafood, as well as a picturesque view of
Plymouth Harbor. On a recent evening, we
enjoyed watching night fall over the
harbor from our window-side table in the
second-floor restaurant.Starters
The menu highlights the
delights of the ocean in every aspect.
For an appetizer, choose from clams
casino, scallops in bacon, or shrimp
cocktail, or opt for traditional
favorites such as buffalo wings, stuffed
mushrooms, or potato skins. We chose the
scallops in bacon, and were not
disappointed -- far from it! The tasty
morsels were served over a bed of spicy
jambalya and despite the generous serving
size, they were devoured almost
instantly.
The 1620 Restaurant offers
French onion soup, a very fresh New
England clam chowder and something a
little different, Portuguese fish soup.
Don't miss the latter -- it is a spicy
melange of several different kinds of
fish in a rich, tomato-y sauce. The
serving was enormous; with some bread,
this would make a very satisfying lunch.
Entrees
Dinner entrees include baked
scrod, stuffed shrimp or swordfish,
lobster pie, a fried seafood platter,
steak tips, and chicken dishes, as well
as specialties such as hickory-smoked
mahi-mahi, seafood Diane, seafood
fettuccine and the previously-mentioned
Portuguese fish stew (the big brother of
the soup, but overflowing with mounds of
fruits de mer!). We couldn't resist
trying the seafood Diane, and were we
ever delighted! Lobster, scallops, shrimp
and calamari were sauteed with onions and
peppers, then finished with a wine-based
sauce and served over linguine. It was
the finest presentation of seafood we've
tasted in quite a while, and, as Boston
Insiders, we've tried our share! Entrees
are served with a delightfully presented
green salad with (what else, given the
region) cranberry vinaigrette dressing.
The luncheon menu offers
similar, less expensive versions of many
of the dinner entrees, and also seafood
salads and sandwiches.
Other Details
The restaurant has a small
wine list, and offers several kinds of
bottled beer. We had been hoping to try
Plimoth Rock Ale, brewed and bottled in
the style of the original settlers for Plimoth
Plantation,
but alas, this restaurant carries only
the more mainstream beers.
