      Angora Cafe
472 Commonwealth Avenue
Kenmore Square
Boston
(617) 437-0404 or 1-800-696-3069

Whether its a college atmosphere or just good food you're looking for, the Angora Cafe, with its close location to Boston University and its large menu, will fulfill both. Located in Kenmore Square, the Angora Cafe is a great stop while visiting schools, taking in a game at nearby Fenway, or just exploring the city.

About the Restaurant
The Angora Cafe is located in a small room in the long row of businesses in Kenmore Square. It can be difficult to find, but look for their sign, the outdoor tables in the warm weather, and many times, the line out the door. It has the look of a cafe, with small round tables for two and a large mural of an outdoor cafe on the wall. Orders are taken at the counter and can be either taken out or enjoyed there, provided that tables are available.

Outdoor dining is available on the patio in the warmer months. Kenmore Square doesn't provide much to look at other than a lot of cars moving through, but don't worry -- the traffic isn't noisy enough inhibit conversation.

On the Menu
The restaurant has a nice variety of food and since it is all made right in front of you, it is easy to substitute what you want. To start, salads come in two sizes and include everything from a simple tossed salad to one including goat cheese and sundried tomato. There are also daily soup specials and simple sandwiches like turkey, roast beef, or tuna salad.

For larger and more adventurous tastes, the Angora Cafe offers a large variety of roll-ups. These are huge and are quite sufficient to feed two people with modest appetites. The menu includes roll-ups with everything from hummus to avocado and brie to the standard chicken. These are a great value, providing a lot of sandwich for a relatively small amount of money.

The cafe is very Boston-oriented, as illustrated by the sports team logos on the wall and the naming of the triple decker sandwiches. All the major colleges in the Boston area have been honored by one of these, which include a variety of meats and cheeses. Alumni will be proud to order one and these sandwiches are probably the cheapest way possible to associate yourself with these schools.

The Cafe also serves pizza and calzones, which take a bit longer to prepare than the sandwiches (since they are made to order with your choice of thirty toppings) but are we find that they are well worth the ten-minute wait. Calzones can be made with the same toppings and, along with the pizzas, were proclaimed to be "wicked good" by the Bostonian diners at our table.

Dessert
For many area college students, the Angora Cafe's frozen yogurt is THE reason to visit Kenmore Square. Angora offers soft frozen yogurt in 51 flavors, which can be mixed and matched to taste. Everything from Kit Kat to Kiwi, from Snickers to Spearmint, and Decaf. Coffee to Pumpkin is available, along with the standard chocolate and vanilla. Servings come in one size only, but it is a big portion. We agree that the yogurt alone is worth a trip to the Angora Cafe.

Hours and Delivery
The Angora Cafe is open 8 AM - midnight Monday through Friday, and 9 AM - midnight, Saturday and Sunday. The menu is the same at all times, so be prepared for a soup and sandwich or pizza even in the morning. Since it's located so close to BU, the cafe is almost always busy. In the summer, the cafe gets even crazier when the warm weather makes people long to dine outside. The staff says there is often a lull at about 3 PM, making mid-afternoon about the only time a person is guaranteed not to have to wait to be served.

The cafe has no specific delivery area so just call with your address and they'll tell you if they can deliver to it. They will deliver to most of the hotels in the area so they're a great place to call with late-night hunger pains

Helpful Hints
The cafe is located down a set of stairs, so it's not handicap accessible. Also, be aware that there is no public bathroom within the restaurant and you'll be sent next door to use one. Since the tables and the restaurant are so small, we don't recommend taking a large group. The staff will allow tables to be moved around, but putting more than two tables together is nearly impossible.

There is another Angora Cafe located on Commonwealth Ave. in Brookline, but don't be fooled. It has the same name and much of the same menu since both were once owned by the same person, but the food and atmosphere are not necessarily comparable.

Directions
Take the T green line to Kenmore Square. Once on the sidewalk, walk inbound and you'll see the restaurant, 472 Commonwealth Ave., on the right. Call for directions or delivery: (617) 437-0404 or 1-800-696-3069.
