There is an exciting array of events and activities in and around Boston this year. Here are some of the highlights:

January

February

  • The Chinese New Year - traditionally celebrated with fireworks and feasting on all kinds of delicacies in Boston's Chinatown.

March

  • The New England Spring Flower Show - see the floral wonderland created by the area's most talented landscapers and designers at the Bayside Expo Center. Visit the Flower Show web site for details.

April

  • Patriots' Day - a state holiday, celebrated with the annual re-enactment of the Battle of Lexington and Concord as well as the running of the Boston Marathon; call 617-236-1652 for details.
  • The Lantern Service - an annual event at the Old North Church, commemorating the lantern's role ("one if by land, two if by sea") in the Patriot Day drama.

May

  • Mother's Day - time for the ducklings to waddle their way over Beacon Hill to the Public Garden lagoon, a journey immortalized in the children's book Make Way for Ducklings.
  • Lilac Sunday - breathe in the perfume of more than 400 varieties of lilacs at the Arnold Arboretum.

June

  • Bunker Hill Day - festivities at the Charlestown Navy Yard include field music, military drills and maneuvers, and a parade; call (617) 242-5628 for details.
  • St. Peter's Fiesta - an annual event in historic Gloucester that includes fireworks, music, sporting events, a parade and a blessing of the fishing fleet; call 978-283-1601 for more info.

July

  • Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra and Fireworks extravaganza (July 4) - America’s premier Fourth of July celebration with the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra and Fireworks extravaganza held on the Esplanade along the Charles River. This spectacular Hub tradition, which is broadcast live nationwide and attracts nearly half-million attendees to the Esplanade, is Boston at its finest.

August

  • Yankee Homecoming - from Old Fashioned Sunday to the Jimmy Day Parade, Newburyport hosts more than a week of concerts, house tours, and other entertainment; call 978-462-6680.

September

  • Cambridge River Festival - music, dance, children's activities and international foods; call 617349-4380.

October

  • Head of the Charles Regatta - join crew teams from all over on the Charles River in Cambridge/Boston for the world's largest single-day rowing event; call 617-864-8415.
  • Join the fun at the Cranberry Harvest Festival, when millions of berries turn the waters into a crimson sea; for info call 508-747-2350.
  • Haunted Happenings - famous for the 17th century witch trials, Salem plays host to all kinds of eerie events as Halloween draws close; call 978-744-0013 for a free brochure.

November

  • Visit with the colonists at Plimoth Plantation and see what the first Thanksgiving Celebration was really like.

December

  • Boston Common Tree Lighting - listen to area choral groups as more than 50 trees are lit; call 617-635-4505 for details.
  • Boston Tea Party Re-enactment - listen to the patriots debate the tea crisis at Old South Meeting House before marching off to the harbor to dump the tea; call 617-338-1773 for further info.
  • First Night Boston (Dec. 31) - celebrate the coming of the new millenium in the town that first developed the "first night" concept.
