Society
Hill
When many people think of
Philadelphia, it is Society Hill that
comes to mind. This district is full of
charming row houses, tree-lined streets,
and brick and cobblestone sidewalks that
appear to have been virtually untouched
in the last 200 years. Like Boston's
Beacon Hill, it is a neighborhood with
considerable pedigree and history.
Don't miss
Hill-Physick-Keith House on 4th
Street. This large (22-room) structure is
the only freestanding house in Society
Hill. It features an elegantly restored
interior, fine Federal and Empire
furniture and a beautiful garden.
Even the brick buildings of
Philadelphia Hospital (the nation's first
hospital, founded in 1751), which is
located at the heart of the neighborhood
at 8th Street near Pine, fits right in,
within only an occasional screaming siren
to remind you of the present.
