The part of West
Philadelphia called University City, is
separated from Center City by the
Schuylkill River and Route 76. Although
Philadelphia is home to many institutions
of higher learning, it is primarily the
Ivy League University of Pennsylvania
that gives this section of town its name
(although Drexel University is also close
by).
The campus itself is quite
attractive -- we recommend a stroll along
Walnut Walk (near 34th Street), with
plenty of time to admire College Hall
(said to be the inspiration of the house
in Charles Addams' The Addams Family
cartoons), the fraternity houses, and the
statue of Ben Franklin seated on a bench
(a classic photo op). You may also want
to pay a visit to the Museum
of Archaeology and Anthropology,
which has an interesting collection of
Egyptian artifacts or the Institute
of Contemporary Art,
which often features innovative visual
artists.
While you're in the area, we
recommend a stop at the White Dog Cafe
(3420 Sansom Street) for a drink or a
bite to eat.
