Children's Books in and about San Francisco

Planning a trip to San Francisco with children in tow? Don't forget to pack some books for your kids to read on the way. Reading will help familiarize your children with San Francisco's history and with the sights they will see -- and keep them busy while you are traveling, too. We compiled the following list of favorites in honor of Children's Book Week, but they are worth a stop at the bookstore or library any time!

Children of Alcatraz: Growing up on the Rock
by Claire Rudolf Murphy
The history of the famous prison, focusing on the children who lived on Alcatraz Island.

Earthquake in the Early Morning (Magic Tree House Series #24)
by Mary Pope Osborne, iIllustrated by Salvatore Murdocca
Jack and Annie travel to the morning of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. A fabulous series for children in grades 1-3.

The Mystery in San Francisco (The Boxcar Children Series #57)
by Gertrude Chandler Warner, illustrated by Charles Tang
Something strange is going on at Fisherman's Wharf.

Pop's Bridge
by Eve Bunting, illustrated by C. F. Payne
The story of the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge from the viewpoint of an "skywalker's" son.

Spy X: The Code (Spy X Series)
Hide and Seek (Spy X Series #2)
Proof Positive (Spy X Series #3)
Tunnel Vision (Spy X Series #4)
all by Peter Lerangis
In this series, Andrew and Evie's mom has disappeared and in decoding the clues she's left them, the twins follow a trail that leads them from Connectict to San Francisco. Recommended highly for kids in grades 2-5.

This is San Francisco: A Classic Portrait of the City
by Miroslav Sasek
Although much about the city has changed since this book was first published in 1962, Sasek's illustrations will still impress both kids and adults.

West from Home: Letters of Laura Ingalls Wilder, San Francisco 1915
by Laura Ingalls Wilder, edited by Roger Lea MacBride
Letters written during a trip to San Francisco by the author of the beloved "Little House" series.
