Joel Ruben Madden was born on March 11, 1979 to a middle class family in Waldorf, Maryland. His identical twin brother, Benji Madden, plays guitar and Joel is the lead vocalist for the band Good Charlotte. He also as an older brother and younger sister. When Madden was 16 years old, his father left the family, prompting the singer to change his last name from Combs, his father's name, to the maiden name of Madden.

Madden dated Hilary Duff for two and a half years, then only a month after the two split began dating Nicole Richie. The two have since become pregnant, officially announced in July 2007.
