Molly Sims: I'm Tough in a Southern Way

Who said Molly Sims doesn't like a challenge? Not only did she take on the monumental task of hosting the first Project Runway spin-off, Project Accessory, but she did it while simultaneously planning her September wedding to producer Scott Stuber. "That was a fun adventure," she laughs.

"Fun" is an adjective that repeatedly comes up when Molly discusses her gig hosting the hotly anticipated accessory competition series, which aims to do for stilettos and necklaces what Runway did for skirts and jackets. And the actress/model/host has a vested interest in building up this occupation since she has her own jewelry line (Grayce by Molly Sims) and a lifelong obsession with accessories.

I caught up with the newlywed to find out why she was attracted to Project Accessory, what kind of crazy designs you can expect and how her Southern honesty differs from Heidi Klum's German realness.

Insider.com: What was your first thought when Lifetime approached you about hosting a spin-off?
Molly Sims: I am a huge fan of Project Runway and a huge fan of Heidi's, so when they first brought me the idea of a spin-off, I wasn't sure if I wanted to do something that someone else had done. But when they said it was from the same people but focused on a totally different topic, I said, "OK, I need to do that." I mean, billions of dollars are spent on accessories – more money than clothes!

Insider: What surprised you most about the show once you started filming?
Molly: We've always seen what goes into making a dress or a skirt or a top, but I've honestly never seen how someone makes a shoe or bag – I was shocked by what they go through to make this art. I mean, to make a shoe, you have to work with a cobbler! Some of the designers had never made shoes, so it was interesting to see the camaraderie or the disdain between the designers in terms of who helped who. It was such a fun time. These 12 designers are freakin talented – their hands would bleed for these pieces. The challenges are so interesting because obviously we do a whole spin on them, and make them so difficult. Like, you have to use pennies and get $100.

Insider: What was the craziest, in a good way, piece that was made?
Molly: Someone makes a necklace out of rat traps.

Insider: Would you wear that?
Molly: I would have paid probably $500, it was so cool. The thing is, these designers need to know who the woman they're designer for is, but also have to show their point of view – delivering both is the challenge, every week. They could be off the charts crazy, making something I would never wear in theory but then you see how it all somehow came together and totally change your mind.

Insider: What was the craziest, in a bad way, piece that was made?
Molly: We saw a chandelier on someone's neck that was made from a chandelier. There's also a Hawaiian princess piece [laughs]. You have to have style, you have to have taste. And that's where I was really hard on the designers. Get a muse or think about your woman. I mean, there was some stuff that no one would buy. I was tough. I know that this is the exploration of your creativity, but at the same time, you've got to achieve something.

Insider: How does your judging style differ from Heidi's?
Molly: Like them, I'm very honest. I don't think it serves the designers in any way – now or in the future -- to sugar coat things. Some days they loved me and on others, I'm sure they wanted to strangle me [laughs]. But I'm different because I think of their work as a whole. Since I was there for every challenge, I tried to take in a grander sense. Each week, I would think about last week and the week before and what they'd shown. In that way, I had an all-encompassing approach. I'm not tough in a German way, I'm tough in a Southern way. Although, I don't think "Bye Ya’ll" has the same effect as "Auf Wiedersehen."

Insider: What is the Project Accessory sign off?
Molly: Tune in to find out!

Project Accessory premieres tonight after the Project Runway finale on Lifetime! And the host just launched MollySims.com, her personal website, that kicks off with a giveaway of the products used in her make-up look as designed by her own make-up artist.
