Wife of Alex Rodriguez Files For Divorce

"The Insider" has the latest...

The wife of baseball star Alex Rodriguez filed for divorce in a Miami court on Monday, citing alleged "extramarital affairs" by her husband.

In papers filed with the Miami-Dade County Family Court, Cynthia Rodriguez said she decided to divorce after having "exhausted every effort to salvage" her marriage. "However, Alex has emotionally abandoned his wife and children and has left her with no choice but to divorce him," the papers said.

The divorce papers allege the marriage is "irretrievably broken" due to Alex's alleged "extramarital affairs and other marital misconduct." The couple married in November 2002.

The filing comes after pop icon Madonna issued a statement on Sunday denying news reports that  implied she was having a romantic relationship with Rodriguez, or that she plans to end her marriage to Guy Ritchie.

In Madonna's statement, issued to People magazine, she explains her relationship with the New York Yankee slugger. "My husband and I are not planning on getting a divorce. I know Alex Rodriguez through Guy Oseary, who manages both of us. I brought my kids to a Yankee game. I am not romantically involved in any way with Alex Rodriguez. I have nothing to do with the state of his marriage or what spiritual path he may choose to study."

Cynthia Rodriguez is seeking primary custody of the couple's two children, as well as child support and alimony.
