The record was previously set by 2007's Spider-Man 3, with $151.1 million.
The Dark Knight, which stars late actor Heath Ledger as The Joker, earned an estimated $66.4 million on its opening day. It took in $18.5 million in Friday midnight shows alone.
The last Batman installment, 2006's Batman Begins, grossed $15 million on its opening day and $48.7 million for the weekend.
I guess most of the credit for enormous success of this film goes to Heath Ledger. His performance has been praised so immensely that people just want to see what is really going on with him in this film. It goes without saying that ladies are also going to catch this film for the eye candy named Christian Bale. I haven't watched this film - yet - but I am going tomorrow and can I say I'm totally psyched! Can't wait!
