"The Insider" has confirmed that Oscar winner Morgan Freeman was in a car crash last night at 11:30 near his home town in rural Mississippi and hospitalized in "serious" condition.
The Jaws of Life were used to extract Morgan and a female passenger from the 71-year-old actor's 1997 Nissan Maxima and both were airlifted to Memphis Medical Center, police said.
Mississippi state police said Freeman's car went off the shoulder of the road and flipped over. It was a one-person car crash and there was no indication that alcohol was involved, police said.
Sun Sentinel reporter Clay McFerrin tells "The Insider" that after he arrived on the accident scene it appeared Freeman's car was airborne when it left the road and dropped 8-10 feet into a ditch.
McFerrin added that the actor was "conscious" and joking with a rescuer on the scene, even telling one onlooker trying to get a picture that there are "no freebies."
"The Insider" has also learned that Freeman is due to begin production in early September on 'The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle,' co-starring Pierce Brosnan and directed by Danny DeVito.
