Even though Michael Phelps broke his record for Olympic gold-medal wins with eight last week, swimming great Mark Spitz still feels he could give the 23-year-old a run -- or shall we say a paddle -- for his money, says the New York Post.
“I know everything there is to know about how to beat Michael, and he would know how to beat me,” Spitz said playfully, adding: “We’d probably tie.”
Spitz, 58, won a then-record seven gold medals at the 1972 Olympic games in Munich. He told the Post that Phelps' record-breaking accomplishment couldn’t “have happened to a nicer guy. … I knew it was going to happen eventually.”
Phelps recently recreated Spitz’s iconic Sports Illustrated cover. “I saw this Tuesday," Spitz said of the cover. "It’s pretty amazing.”

Do you think the media is too harsh on Michael Phelps' controversial pot smoking photo?
