"Richard Gere is wonderful and the cinematography is fabulous," says Irving, now 76. "[But] whatever the film's esthetic value is, its historical value is almost zero. It portrays me as a scumbag. If I were that man, I'd shoot myself."Irving says he tried getting along with Hallstrom and his crew: "They asked me a great many questions. I replied in depth. They ignored most of what I said."
He was also willing to do an audio commentary for the DVD. "But they wanted me to sign a release that gave them more rights than I would give to my mother," says Irving. "So I turned them down." He also demanded that they remove his credit as a "technical consultant."
