GMTV presenter Kate Garraway is to provoke controversy with a documentary about women who breastfeed other people’s babies.
The former Strictly Come Dancing contestant, who has a two-year-old daughter, Darcey, met mothers in America who breastfeed children other than their own and a career woman who pays someone to feed her baby while she is at work.
And to publicise the programme, she has posed for a provocative photo-shoot in which it appears she is breastfeeding a calf.Miss Garraway, 41, who is married to former Labour spin doctor Derek Draper, admitted she would have struggled to let another woman breastfeed her baby.
‘That bond was really emotionally important to me. I would never have been able to let someone else breastfeed her in a million years,’ she said.
But she said her prejudices were challenged when she met the American women. ‘I’d gone into the film thinking, “Why are they doing it? Is it because it’s easier than breastfeeding themselves?”‘They said, “No, we’re doing it totally in the interests of the child, and we’re prepared to sacrifice our ego over having that role”.
‘They said, “What you’re thinking about is your role as a mother, you’re not thinking about the child at all.”’Miss Garraway said: ‘I came away from this documentary just in wonderment at the female body.
‘Because of the sexualisation of breasts, we don’t see them as the clever, brilliant things they are. Not in the way that we see the brain or the heart.’
Talking about the photo-shoot which makes it appear that she is breastfeeding a calf, she said: ‘I wanted to make people stop and think about whether it’s crazy to feed milk from another species.
‘I want to go as far as possible to be provocative and shake people up, without actually being so offensive that I upset GMTV viewers.’
