Batman and his batmobile are once again crashing through the record books. 'The Dark Knight' crossed the 500 million dollar mark on Sunday, in half the time it took the number one blockbuster 'Titanic' to make a half billion dollars, the Associated Press reports.

After just six weeks, 'The Dark Knight' has now grossed 502.4 million at the domestic box office.

Now, the burning question, will the 'Dark Knight' sink 'Titanic''s hold on number one? Industry observers don’t think so. The James Cameron epic  film took in over 600 million at the domestic box office. Dan Fellman, head of distribution of Warner Bros, tells the AP that he expects the caped crusader to swoop in somewhere around the $530 million mark.

'The Dark Knight' has been on track for box office glory since it hit the multi-plex. When it bowed on July 18th it had the biggest opening weekend of all time, making over $158 million. By Aug 18, the Christopher Nolan flick became the second highest grossing film of all time, surpassing the beloved first 'Star Wars' film.

  • I'm hoping it does... not saying Titanic was a bad movie but I don't want in the number one stop being held by something that's affiliated with Céline Dion

  • you guys, who ing cares. This is the top spot in money, it's utterly meaningless. Titanic is not the best movie ever and neither is Dark Knight.

    • "Titanic is not the best movie ever and neither is Dark Knight."
Correction: Titanic is not the best movie ever BUT the Dark Knight is. :P

  • I hope The Dark Knight surpasses Titanic.
    Titanic sucked.

Either way, this whole "movie grossing" thing blows, everyone knows the most successful movie in history was Gone With The Wind, the only reason it's not on the list is because tickets were much cheaper when it was released.

  • Why did Titanic make so much money anyways?

    • From what I read, it was released in 1997 at the end of December and going into 1998- really didn't have much competition. It stayed in the theatres for months and didn't have other movies to compete with it until the summer months - Saving Private Ryan, There's Something About Mary, etc. and other movies. It is also a movie that is able to reach a very wide demographic audience- children, teenagers, adults, grandparents, etc. Not to mention the repeated viewings from the teenage audience BUT considering it IS a 3 and half hour movie- its no # 1 status is still very impressive.

    • In comparison to Titanic, The Dark Knight's second place status is impressive as well. A comic book movie released in the very competitive summer months reaching the 500 million mark within a couple of months is amazing. Not to mention, the demographic for The Dark Knight is probably aimed at boys and men and people from 13 years and up. But the quality of the movie did appeal to a wide ranging audience because of how well it was made. It was more than just a comic movie - it was a suspenseful dramatic crime thriller. If enough people go to see it when it is rereleased in January, it could definitely beat Titanic.

  • it made so much money because it is a romantic film, which couples went. Also Leonardo DiCapiro was such a hottie to many girls who kept going back for more to keep watching him! That explains the money.

  • At ~$10 a ticket, it would be hard for this movie to not break records...see more

  • The thing is, none of this is indexed for inflation, so Titanic actually made more than $600 million by today's prices.
