In a statement just in to ET, John McCain’s Vice Presidential candidate, Sarah Palin and her husband, Todd Palin, confirm that their 17-year-old daughter, Bristol, is pregnant.

"Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We're proud of Bristol's decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support.”

The Palin’s say Bristol plans to wed the father of the child. "Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi's privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates."

Bristol is one of the Palin's five children. Reuters is reporting that the Palin's issued this statement after rumors of her daughter's pregnancy circulated on the Internet.

    • Have they considered adoption? Is a shotgun wedding and a pair of 17-year-old parents really the best thing for a child? I agree -- good luck to them -- but I question whether this is the best option for the child or the parents.

    • Sarah Palin's daughter has had 5 months to make a "bold and honest" decision and marry the father of her child. What are they waiting for? This is the party who preaches abstinence; this is the party who rails against women who have children outside of marriage. Sarah's daughter has had plenty of time to marry the young man in question. Her daughter is now plastered over the internet and will soon be plastered on every "rag" magazine sold. What kind of mother would put their teenage daughter through that kind of situation? Before you can preach family values, you have to exhibit them in your own personal life. I was undecided about my vote; I'm now certain that it will not be John McCain/Sarah Palin.

  • Sarah Palin needs to address the tragedy of this situation, as a 17 year old child having a child IS a tragedy. Compounding this mistake is allowing a marriage at too young an age for the wrong reasons. If Bristol goes on to get a college degree and securing a future for herself and her child and then still wishes to marry the child's father, good for her. But obviously she is not of an age to make such a mature decision and Ms. Palin ought to encourage her daughter to finish growing up herself before making that choice. Oh yeah, and maybe Ms. Palin will now see the need for something other than abstinence only education, since her own child and her child's boyfriend clearly didn't get that message. Or were they were like the rest of the majority of kids in Alaska who drop out of high school by tenth grade?

  • How did Sarah Palin not know until now that her 17 year old unwed daughter was pregnant? Has she been so busy chasing after political power that she has no time to exercise good family values and manage her own family . And if she can't manage her own family why should we expect that she'll be able to manage our country?

And what does this say about McCain's judgement. Either he didn't vett Palin thoroughly, or McCain doesn't care about the family value proponents in the GOP that will rightfully have doubts about Palin's
own family values. This also shows a definite lack of wisdom on McCain's and his propensity to make knee jerk desperate decisions.

  • How tragic to make a 17 y/o get married. If anything, she should not get married right now. So, doesn't the right to life Palin believe in speaking to her children about sex and birth control. Maybe she's too busy doing other things instead of keeping her mind on her family.

    • Im sorry but i do disagree. Bristol is her own person and there is no way her mother cuold keep tabs on her 24/7. Although mothers with they could they cant. On top of that my mother was pregnant at 14 and again at 20. She is the best and most amazing women. I have faith in Bristol that if my mother could do it without the support of her family then Bristol can do this with the support of ehr family

  • The math to this isn't adding up. I don't wish to be malicious to a teenager, but if the story is accurate she became pregnant when she not attending school. Supposedly she was out of school for five months with mono.

Combine this with the bizarre, suddenly I'm seven months pregnant Sarah, who's water supposedly breaks and she risks the life of herself and unborn special needs child to fly 8+ hours from Texas to Alaska while eight months pregnant, then dry 50 miles to a remote hospital, avoiding the best hospitals in Texas and Anchorage?

At best it was a reckless act, at worst, it's a lie.
That's not the standard practice of someone with a sound mind. Or is there more to the story that would hurt the GOP's myth of family values.

Life is not perfet, people are not perfect. It is about "personal" responsibility, it it Sarah's fault her daughter got pregnant? or even if her husband got a DWI before he ever met her? or how about Biden plagerizing a run for president speech as an elected official....My name is Katie, from Chicago.

Oh also, isn't it a bit fallacious to be calling liberals 'hate filled jerks who are evil to the core' ? Ad Hominem and Strawman fallacies there. Now I'm not saying liberals are perfect, far from it, I mean we gotta pay more taxes because they want to support illegal immigrants for a start, but using loaded language probably isn't gonna make people think conservatives are great people either

  • Republican family values are a joke. While Gov. Palin was busy with her political career, her daughter was busy getting pregnant. Perhaps if Gov. Palin parented her children with better care, her 17 year old would not be preparing to be a parent herself. And...who is taking care of her special needs son while she's busy on the campaign trail? Perhaps Gov Palin needs to spend more time with her children who obviously need her more than our country does. Did McCain vet this woman? I think his choice is rash and desperate. I will not be voting for the McCain/Palin ticket in November.

    • Let's just turn this around a minute. An experiement, if you will...
Democratic family values are a joke. While Hilary was busy with her career, Bill was getting BJs in the Oval Office. Perhaps if Pres. Clinton attended to his marriage with better care, his family wouldn't have been devastated & the country made a laughingstock in the eyes of the world. Perhaps Bill needs to spend more time with his family who obviously need him more than our country doesd. Did the Americans who voted for him clearly bet this man? Evidently not. Your holier than thou outrage doesn't jibe with your clearly liberal post.

    • Oh come on. If you have ever been a parent you know that unless you keep your children chained up in their rooms, if they have their mind set on having sex, they are gonna have it, regardless of what was taught. Also, you don't know the situation around the pregnancy! Just because we teach abstinance doesn't mean that it will always be chosen by the child. As far as you know, it could've been a Trojan baby, thats how often BC works. Abstinance is 100%. BTW Obama's mother was 18 and unwed when she got pregnent with him, does that make her a bad parent?

  • I wonder how "bold" and "honest" an unwed teenaged pregnancy would be to people if this weren't the daughter of the Republican choice for vice president. I will never cease to be amazed at the raw hypocrosy of the people who crucify people over their human mistakes when it comes to people who they know nothing about but are predisposed to admire because they don't like the alternative.
Sarah Palin has been revealed- in less than five days- to have a husband who has been arrested for drunk driving, be currently under ethics charges for allegedly firing a man over a family matter, and have an unwed daughter who is pregnant but "getting" married (at 17). This is truly the party of "family values".
I'm not disgusted at the fact that Republicans blindly forgive this stuff. I'm disgusted that they can't forgive much, much less in someone they've been TOLD not to like.
    Sick.

  • I support Sarah Palin's daughter Bristol also. Many young women further their education and futures while dealing with LIFE -- which does happen... it may not be what the parents hoped for at this time.. but I applaud the family for the support and love they are willing to give to both the young mother and father... I do not see where she is FORCED to marry -- it is her choice.. so why the spin from others..let us all pray for a healthy happy baby and family... just like we would if it was are own daughter or son... they desire that as do all of our youth out there.

As a republican, I am DISGUSTED that the party in so far into the Christian Wrong policies that it is screwing up the chance for women to succeed. Then again, this is from a mother who is proud of bringing in a child with into the world with down syndrome. I respect life, but that is just cruel and selfish.

    • I don't care about this woman's family values, but I do care about her experience, and I don't see her as a VP. I think McCain thought picking a female running mate would help swing a few more votes his way.

However, what's the relevance of Obama's mother? Sure, it's his family, but he didn't raise his mother, she raised him (Which says a lot about her).

Children aren't responsible for their parents' actions, but parents are damn sure responsible for their children. (Note: I don't care about the pregnancy, just making a point.)

  • Sarah and Todd Palin should be focused on their family right now and not the ambitions of the White House. A son going off to war, an infant with Down's Syndrome and a teenager who's pregnant. The selfish ambition of parents who would thrust their pregnant teenage daughter into the spotlight are to be questioned. Their judgement and John McCain's are in question. McCain shows no compassion for Bristol Palin in selecting her mohter when he oucld have selected lost of others.

    • What if she said no? Could you imagine the guilt that her daughter would feel of knowing that she was the reason her mother could not accept the position of VP? That piled with the guilt of already knowing that she went against her mother's teachings? I wouldn't wish that on anybody.

  • You've got to be kidding. How in the world does this show culture and respect for human values? I'm proud of Sarah Palin for standing beside her daughter and supporting her (probably no other choice given her public life.) But having a marriage in a difficult situation, like a teenage pregnancy, is not responsible. It would have been much more responsible for Sarah Palin to support sex education other than just abstinence. It would have been much more "honest' if her daughter could have spoken to her about her desire to have sex and to have been supported in helping her obtain responsible birth control. Mistakes happen, teenagers don't always have the best judgement but not teaching responsible sex education to a 16 child is simply not responsible or honest.

  • Who really are the hypocrites here? For all the people who claim it's the "liberals", what a joke. Both Democrats & Republicans pounce on anything to use against one another, that is just modern-day politics. When the late Henry Hyde was attacking Clinton, he was covering up his own affairs. When Eliott Spritzer was attacking Wall Street, he was spending thousands on hookers...so let's just drop the liberal vs. conservative BS and accept the fact that people with power do a lot of bad things in the course of trying to do good.
As far as "Family Values" go, could someone please define them? I thought it was to provide food, an education, emotional protection and shelter. A liberal can do that as well as a conservative and vice-versa.

Did our Founding Fathers not come here to escape religious persecution & unreasonable taxes? All this bickering over religion is insane...its been going on all over the world for hundreds of years. Wasn't religion meant to bring people together?

As far as Clinton making the US "the laughingstock of the world", didn't Congress do more with their Impeachment hearings? Plus haven't Bush & Cheney done so with Iraq, Katrina, et al?
Our world leaders are not our moral leaders...read the Constitution.

As far as Bristol Palin's future, I wish her luck. Hopefully McCain will lose so her mom can be there to help her raise her baby.

Couldn't agree more. I felt McCain's choice for VP was directed at the hope of picking up Hillary Clinton Voters. First, it is an insult to all women that we would vote for any "Woman" regardless her political position just to put a "Woman" in the white house. I questioned his judgement then but even more now. This 17 year old child must be very anxious and going through a tremendous amount of uncertainty at this time.. The fact that the entire Nation now knows, and will now be made part of political history has got to be very upseting. I am not surprised at McCain as his morals are questionable anyway but shame on you Sarah, your daughter deserves better.

  • The issue is not that Palin's 17 year old daughter is pregnant, but the issue is that Gov. Sarah Louise Heath Palin lied about it and that Sen. John Sidney McCain, III knew about the lie and did nothing about it. Here are just a few of the character flaws of these two candidates.
    1. One of them is already lying: When the Anchorage Daily News did report the news today (that Palin’s daughter is pregnant), it pointed out: "The Daily News had asked Palin's press secretary, Bill McAllister, over the weekend to address rumors that Bristol was pregnant. 'I don't know. I have no evidence that Bristol's pregnant,' he said on Saturday."

The McCain team asserted that he knew about the pregnancy when he selected Palin. She has five children and now a grandchild coming as she hits the campaign trail.

    2. Palin is already a flip-flopper (a character flaw that the Republicans like to throw around a great deal). "I told Congress, thanks but no thanks on that bridge to nowhere," Palin told the cheering McCain crowd, referring to Ketchikan's Gravina Island Bridge. But Palin was for the Bridge to Nowhere before she was against it. The Alaska governor campaigned in 2006 on a build-the-bridge platform, telling Ketchikan residents she felt their pain when politicians called them "nowhere." They're still feeling pain today in Ketchikan, over Palin's subsequent decision to use the bridge funds for other projects -- and over the timing of her announcement, which they say came in a pre-dawn press release that seemed aimed at national news deadlines.

    3. Palin, the “family values” candidate is already begging the media to ignore her lie "We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi's privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates."

John Sidney McCain, III tells crude and insensitive jokes. Is this the man we want in the Whitehouse?

    • "Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly?" he asked guests at a Senate Republican fundraiser. "Because her father is Janet Reno;" Said by John Sidney McCain, III in 1998.
    • "The French remind me a little bit of an aging actress of the 1940s who is still trying to dine out on her looks but doesn't have the face for it," McCain told Fox News a few years ago.
    • Another favorite has been the elderly. He has recalled groveling for forgiveness when, during his 1986 campaign, he referred to a retirement community called "Leisure World" as "Seizure World."
    • In 1999, in the course of apologizing for his joke about Clinton he recalled for reporters another bad joke: 'I said, 'The nice thing about Alzheimer's is you get to hide your own Easter eggs.'" (Earlier in the 2008 campaign season, he reworked that joke to make himself the target.)
    • McCain was also recently condemned by the government of Iran for suggesting that increasing U.S. cigarette sales to Iran could be "a way of killing 'em."

But most voters will not know about this aspect of McCain when they vote this fall. They don't know that he's a guy who uses the word "c--t" to describe his wife--in public. They don't.

    • In an appearance before the National League of Cities and Towns in Washington D.C., McCain supposedly asked the crowd if they had heard "the one about the woman who is attacked on the street by a gorilla, beaten senseless, raped repeatedly and left to die?" The punch line: "When she finally regains consciousness and tries to speak, her doctor leans over to hear her sigh contently and to feebly ask, "Where is that marvelous ape?" The joke, as one can imagine, did not go over well with various women's groups, which responded with indignation. But the McCain campaign denied that he had ever said the offensive gag. "It's pretty obvious to us that this is a politically motivated sideshow," Torrie Clarke, McCain's spokeswoman at the time, said back in 1986. Till this day it has never been proven definitively true or false whether the Senator ever said the line. The Huffington Post reached out to the original reporter in that story, Norma Coile (who after talking to multiple sources months after it was told wrote about the response to the rape joke in the Tuscon Citizen) to find out if she thought it was true.” I’m not sure exactly what the wording was of the joke, but something was said. Some joke involving a rape and ape was said. Enough women repeated it to me at the time and the McCain campaign had a non-denial denial," said Coile, now with the Arizona Daily Star. "It came after his 'Seizure World' joke, in which he referred to the [retirement community] Leisure World as Seizure World... I just think it reinforced this idea that John McCain is humor-challenged. Whatever his qualities, he seems to have a tin ear for how these jokes will go over."

John Sidney McCain, III and Sarah Louise Heath Palin are already beginning the lies for which the GWB administration has become notorious. We cannot afford another 4 years of the Bush type administration. These are selfish, inhumane people with our lives in their hands.
Before you tell me that any of this is untrue ...Google it.

  • I am having a very tough time trying to figure out why McCain and the Republicans talking with the press are convinced that Sarah Palin is the BEST VP Candidate in the entire Republican Party.

I was a Basketball and Baseball Mom, also president of the PTA and was president of the local Woman's Club for two years. Additionally, I am an executive, owner of a very successful business. Previously I was solely responsible for many successful multiple multi-million dollar projects over a period of 24 years. I too bucked the status quo but created value and all projects were successful. I have a son and a daughter. Neither have been pregnant but I certainly would support them if the situation was the same as Sarah Palins daughter. I would not , however, put my political ambitions ahead of my love, commitment and support for by daughter by having her life exposed to the world. I think that is shameful and unforgivable. I have traveled out of the country many times..my passport has been active about 35 years. Palin had to get a passport so she could visit the troops in IRAQ, last year. Please support me for VP as I feel my Foreign Affairs experience is far more extensive. I also believe Global Warming is real.. I support endangered animals and still look fairly good in a mini skirt. I don't know a lot about the war in Iraq or Afghanistan but can hold my own in a debate. The situation with Iran and Russia I find interesting... .... But it is evident having this type experience and knowledge is not a qualifier for the Republican Party Vice President Candidate.. I do hope someone will enter my name at the convention. I am "Bizzi" and I approve this message!!

Seriously, I am frightened... the economy is a mess, we are involved in two wars, we have better than a three trillion dollar deficit and the Republicans is supporting a totally unqualified Vice President that could possibly be President if something happened to McCain.. I do hope the press will hold the supporters feet to the fire and insist they answer the questions they are asked and not sidetrack with how she has executive experience and is a maverick like McCain.

Just like Michelle has been called "Obama's baby mama" on national television by Fox network, his daughters would be dragged through the mud by right wing talking heads. If Sarah Palin cannot even run her own home with any decorum, how can she run a country with dignity? If she doesn't use birth control, how many more Down Syndrome babies will she procreate? Does any American seriously believe that a woman, endlessly pregnant, can run a country?? I'm a Christian feminist mother and even I don't think so. .

And how many of you always use birth control. Not only that, but how many of your parents had you when they were under 21? Did you all ever think that this was the daughter's decision and her boyfriend's alone? When was the last time any parent ever knew everything their teenager was doing? I mean, lay off! Having a baby is not a mustake, keeping it is never a mistake, and marrying the guy you love is never a mistake. And for all you wondering . . . I got married at 18, pregnant at 19, and now have three beautiful kids. I laugh at all the "older moms" because they don't have the energy to keep up with their kids, and alot of them have "too much else that is important". I wouldn't trade my life for anything. I graduated high school, and I am going to college full time as well as being a stay at home mom, and I have straight A's.

Point #2- Way to go Republicans because we all know they will use this poor 17 year old girl as a sympathy vote and to say, "We connect with the masses who have unwed children"

Point #3- This plan will not work, and Sarah Palin's nomination has been a far cry to get support from day one.

Point #4 I would nail her daughter as well, she is a good lookin girl, too bad we will never get the Bush Twin stories about her.

  • John McCain's first wife, Carol, saw the true morality of John when he had numerous affairs while married to her prior to going to Vietnam. After his return, he found that she had been in a very serious car accident and was crippled. She had 23 surgeries, lost 5 inches of height from the damage, and had gained weight. When he found that she was no longer the "swimsuit" model he had married, he began chasing Cindy. He was still married
to his first wife CArol all this time. Cind was 18 years his junior. He chased her around the country and married her 1 month after his divorce from Carol. You trust this man's jugment in picking a running mate? In running our country. Think again. You think this is untrue, check it out. All is true including the fact that his wife Cindy was a drug addict and barely missed going to jail by coming to an agreement with the government agreeing to drug tests, etc. Yeah, great family to hold up as examples of family values!
Shame on us for allowing this to go on undiscussed in the public forum of politics. Every other piece of garbage is out there for all to see!

  • My husband's grandparents married when she was 14. It was not due to pregnancy, they just wanted to. They raised three children and remained happily married until they died in their 90's. Our society tells teens they must be college educated before they marry. I've known a lot of promiscuous college kids. Going to college when you are married is not unheard of. Maybe this is what we should be promoting more. The problem is, when two teens want to marry at this age, we rarely allow it. We do everything possible to talk them out of it. It sounds like this was the case with these two teens. I certainly am not going to cast a stone - it could too easily come back on me for my many mistakes in my own life.

    simple question and answer.

How do you attract a bunch of pussies?
A: Just sacrifice one in public.

That is also why women could, would and should never be equal to men, they think with a their clits and tits. most of the women that want Palin on the ticket do so with:
!. the need for a woman to make history, regardless if she's qualified or not.
    2. To prove women is equal to men and can get the job done.
    3. Just for the hell of it.
If this is how women in America thinks i'm glad i'm not American.

I'm From Canada and I would like a Leader that is very capable, sympathetic, empathetic and careful of my needs as well as others; and i don't particularly care if it's female or male, as long as at the end of the day I have a future for my children and my friends children. This woman is a magnet for controversy and is a "BULLY" not a "bulldog." as she's portraying herself. • It is amusing to me that people think Sarah is a bad mom. The fact is abortion is legal and Sarah's daughter could have opted to have an abortion but the family chose not to. Instead, they made the choice to deal with the harsh criticisms that they are now dealing with. I applaud the family and unless you are God, you should not pass judgment on anyone.

No more Bush policies of oppressions. What a horrible looking woman! What a sorry mom! Her "work" was more important rather than be there for her daughter, and look, the daughter continually seeks out the affection she never received from mom /family.

    How many of you….
Have dinner nightly with your family?
    Go to church?
Play Board games with the FAMILY?
Go to Parent Teacher meeting regularly?
I could go on and on and the answer is simple most have do none of the above and use the LAME excuse they don’t have time. Well guess what? Now that you won’t be able to afford to do anything but pay attention to your families’ maybe then you will learn to appreciate what really matters. Then and only then you MIGHT be of SOME use to YOUR country.

  • Sarah Palin is an amazing women. She knows who she is and where she stands on issues. She doesn't try to be anymore than herself. I respect her for speaking up about things that most people would be afraid to speak up about. It never ceases to amaze me the cruelty of people. President Clinton told the people to leave his daughter out of their talk. People respected that even if they didn't respect him. I cannot believe how ugly people have gotten to strike out at Sarah without knowing this lady. Her family loves this country and are a very supportive to their children. It would be nice to see more people show respect to both these areas. We are blessed to live in the country we live in. If you haven't been out of the USA yet, you need to go to a few countries where freedom, poverty, and wars take place. You will have a whole new outlook on life.

Out of all of those kids, Pax seems to have some insecurity or inner problems that you do not see in the other kids. I do not believe it is Pitt's or Jolie's fault, but it is noticable to the public.

  • There are 4 million babies born in this country every year. Being a politician's kid getting pregnant by accident does not make her a whore, and calling Bristol Palin that is very insulting and vicious - you don't even know the girl.

Here are some fact from AGI:
In 2005, 1.21 million abortions were performed.

Nearly half of pregnancies among American women are unintended, and four in 10 of these are terminated by abortion.

Each year, about two percent of women aged 15-44 have an abortion; 47% of them have had at least one previous abortion.

Fifty percent of U.S. women obtaining abortions are younger than 25: Women aged 20–24 obtain 33% of all abortions, and teenagers obtain 17%.

Even without specific parental involvement laws, six in 10 minors who have an abortion report that at least one parent knew about it.

The reasons women give for having an abortion underscore their understanding of the responsibilities of parenthood and family life. Three-fourths of women cite concern for or responsibility to other individuals; three-fourths say they cannot afford a child; three-fourths say that having a baby would interfere with work, school or the ability to care for dependents; and half say they do not want to be a single parent or are having problems with their husband or partner.

I suppose everybody would leave Sarah and her family alone if her daughter simply got an abortion and dumped the boyfriend, would THAT make everyone happy? Is that better for all of you?
Instead, you rail and yell and complain and cuss that Sarah is stupid, is a bad mother, is an incompetent, had no right to get pregnant at 44, should have aborted her Down's syndrome baby, that she can't run the country and a family at the same time, etc. That's really ignorant of you jerks. Did you really expect Sarah to have an abortion, too? Is a pregnancy really so ugly to you?

You don't know for sure that behind closed doors Sarah didn't have "the talk" with her daughter about sex and pregnancy and birth control and premarital sex instead of "only abstinence". You don't know for sure that Sarah didn't know about the pregnancy before she was picked for VP. You don't know for sure that she forced her daughter to marry the guy who impregnated her daughter.

I don't think being a woman should disqualify her for higher office, nor should she as a wife and mother be disqualified from it just because her daughter got pregnant by accident. Lots of teenagers get pregnant by accident, regardless of how perfectly moral people their parents may be and how well they raise their kids. People are not perfect, lots of imperfect men have become president and VP, so why not a woman, too?

I don't think Sarah is a bad mother because she kept her disabled baby - that's her choice. I don't think Bristol is a bad person because she is keeping her baby - if that's her choice. She's extremely young to get married at 17, I agree, but then pregnancy and school don't mix either - you can't care for a baby in between college classes, because babies need round-the clock care. And you need a job to support yourself in college, so who takes care of the baby? And college loans are expensive.

Bristol will have it way harder than her mom does now, even with the marriage, because IMO it's impossible to care for a newborn baby, work a job, and graduate from college at the same time with out family help or childcare at 17, it's impossible. It makes running a family with a disabled baby, a governorship and a VP post look like a picnic!

What you you want Bristol to do? Have an abortion? Give it up for adoption? Dump it on the street? Babies can't raise themselves.
