Foo Fighters Tell John McCain: No Tune for You!

I Like It I Don't Like It
See More... The Foo Fighters have thrown a monkey wrench in John McCain's use one of their big hits on the campaign trail -- and they're hardly the first big-name band to do so!

The Foos are requesting that McCain stop using their tune “My Hero,” says the Associated Press.

"The saddest thing about this is that 'My Hero' was written as a celebration of the common man and his extraordinary potential," the band said. "To have it appropriated without our knowledge and used in a manner that perverts the original sentiment of the lyric just tarnishes the song."

The Foos join John Mellencamp, ABBA and Jackson Browne as artists who’ve requested that McCain not use their songs as Republican presidential anthems. Browne even sued McCain to protest his use of “Running on Empty” in a campaign ad.

On the flip side, soul singer Sam Moore asked Barack Obama not to use “Soul Man,” says the AP.

  • So it would be OK for Obama to use a Foo song? A candidate with KNOWN TIES to an unrepentent terrorist, an anti-Semitic, anti-American preacher and a convicted felon can use your song? Well, I shouldn't be surprised about this -- the man pictured is a pig. He should buy a comb, some soap, water and shampoo and he should USE them. And STOP picking on John McCain! When were YOU in a prison camp for 5 years, having your shoulders broken and being tortured daily while serving your country? What, in fact, have you ever done for your country? Probably NOTHING! People like you make me want to PUKE. The first 3 letters of the word FOOL are FOO. How appropriate!

    • Talk about missing the point! While legal, it is ethically a crappy thing to do to use a song without asking, especially if the artist doesn't agree at all with your positions.

It's also really *stupid*! It hands a megaphone to that artist to point out that they don't like you ... to all their fans.

    • Are you kidding me? Working with Ayers (current professor of English who lives in Obama's neighborhood) doesn't say anything about Obama. So what if everyone knows they've worked together, that has nothing to do with the guy being a former terrorist. He's an english professor, and that's how Obama knows him.

About Rev. Wright: "“I categorically denounce any statement that disparages our great country or serves to divide us from our allies,” Obama wrote. “I also believe that words that degrade individuals have no place in our public dialogue, whether it’s on the campaign stump or in the pulpit.”

The statements are the strongest rejection to date of the Trinity United Church of Christ pastor, who has served as Obama’s pastor for the last 20 years. In his statement, Obama noted that he had not been at church when the controversial sermons were delivered, and said that he first found out about them last year but decided not to leave the church because Wright was about to retire.

Obama did not point to particular statements by his pastor, and instead said that “all of the statements that have been the subject of controversy are ones that I vehemently condemn.”

He had previously rejected Wright’s decision to present a lifetime achievement award to Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan. At a meeting with Jewish leaders in Cleveland last month, he dismissed Wright as “an old uncle who says things I don’t always agree with,” and said that everyone has someone like that in their family."

    • First of all, no one ever suggested that it would be ok for Obama to use a song without the artist's permission. Though I am voting for him, I would be equally upset with Obama for using my favorite band's song without their permission. Secondly, The Foo Fighters are brilliant artists, especially Dave Grohl, so your attack on his outward appearance is completely irrelevant. Most importantly, IT DOESN'T MATTER THAT JOHN MCCAIN WAS A P.O.W.! I have the utmost respect for him because of what he went through, but it has no relation to his right to act unethically towards musical artists. Get your head out of your ass.

    • If you know anyting about the Foo Fighter's past, then you would know that Dave was a drummer with Nirvana... Now, grunge music is great, its about being dirty, and not caring what other people think... But to completely pervert a song, (which is a brilliant piece of work if you listen to it) But Conservative's like yourself refuse to be mature in allowing other people to have their opinion... Besides, McCain will probably die before his first year.. Leaving us with Palin OH JOY...

    • Okay, since when does someone who's served in the army make a better president than someone who hasn't? George W. Bush served...LOOK AT THE STATE OF THE COUNTRY NOW.

Oh, and making fun of Dave Grohl like that just makes you look like a jerk. Take a good long look at the guy in that picture...he's a much more intelligent and good-hearted human being than you can ever hope to be.

    • Right. XD *laughs* You couldn't convince a child with an argument like that.

Your username, Miss Moo, fits you perfectly as a common part of the superficial misdirected herd. McCain's background is not the matter of question. I actually greatly respect his background. Its his policies.

Any reader can safely assume logically from your racist and overly opinionated diatribe above that you really can't think for yourself, nor do you care about what will happen to this country. Any decent American would never support policies that eradicate the Bill of Rights, pollute us with misdirection and alpha male/ bimbo barbie doll girl stereotypes to follow, and are responsible for advocating slaughter in the name of false ideals, just like terrorists. You must feel incredibly proud of yourself.

For the record, (I wish I could put links here for you as I have undeniable proof of all my claims), when Obama supporters at several rallies were disrespecting John McCain, Obama stopped them calling it unfair, and mentioned directly his background and said that for his service to America, he deserves their respect and gratitude. Perhaps it would do you well to learn difference between fact and opinion. ;)

And the actual fact remains simple. Obama is focused on the issues that affect this country as a whole, while McCain is focused on anything that will get him elected. And he comes doing so fully backing policies that have destroyed the lives of many americans. What fool indeed would put their trust in such a candidate.

It is you, Miss Moo, who should carry complimentary barf bags with you to help those around you deal with your diarrhea of the mouth. Don't bother replying, I will not be coming back to waste my time with you. But I do hope you grow up a bit.

Grohl is angry because he does not want HIS work, HIS music, associated with McCain.

That's his choice. He owns his music. It may seem like a foreign concept to you, but music is property; that's what he does for a living. It's his hard work. If he does not wish his music associated with something, he has every right to contest its use.

  • I don't understand this at all. Wouldn't a band want their music to be played? I think this shows their own political views in that they do not like McCain. I really enjoy the music of the Foo Fighters and I will still continue to listen to them regardless of the own political views. Why don't they just let McCain use their music and leave politics out of it?
    anonymous anonymous 10/10/08 Reply

    • Showing their political views? The hell you say!! Do you think maybe it's because they have a right to decide who and what their songs are associated with? Not to mention that they, under the Constitution, have the same right to opinion that everyone else enjoys?
They don't let McCain use their music for the same reason the other artists didn't--they don't want to be associated with him.
The Foo Fighters, by the way, are very politcally active, and have been so for years now. Do a little research, please--though your moderate stance on listening to the music of a band whose politics you don't agree with is highly refreshing in this day and age.

  • Life reflects Art: The Manchurian Candidate.
I respect all those who serve America. I also respect that John McCain survived many years as a POW, and that makes him a genuine war hero. What I don't respect is that McCain graduated near the bottom of his class, crashed multiple planes during training, and went on to received more medals than he served combat hours, all because of his big wig daddy. Thats right people, google it if you don't believe me. Some of those 28 medals should have been given to pilots who were skillful enough to NOT get shot down. Something the McCaindroid/Playin' supporters don't realize is that being a POW Hero does not qualify one to be President.
    anonymous anonymous 10/11/08 Reply

  • MissMoo please wake up. Stop sucking up all the lies the McCain campaign machine is trying to feed you. Go educate yourself on who Obama really is from some place other than the MCain website or Fox news. McCain having been a POW really has no bearing on what kind of President he would be. The fact that McCain's campaign is being run by a bunch of guys who made up all sorts of lies about McCain when they ran the Bush campaign is telling though. I thought McCain was a great candidate in 2000 but he's a complete sell out now. Talk about a flip flopper, McCain has disregarded his own beliefs to suck up to the crazy Republican base to get the nomination. That's not the kind of leadership America needs.

    • Obama - who supports killing babies? 4 times he voted to allow babies who survived abortions to die alone on a cold steel table in a dirty laundry room? This is int he record; I'm NOT making this up, nor is it a "vast, right-wing conspiracy." And the crap he said when at the 3rd debate was just that --- crap! If it was law, then why did the Senate vote on it? Why did most of the senators oppose it? This is infanticide, not "abortion rights" (an oxymoron if ever there was one).
Obama who says he wants to share the wealth (his own words to Joe the Plumber)?
Obama who knows an unrepentant terrorist? I don't care that William Ayres committed his crimes when Obama was 8 years old; associating with him on a board, in a "community organizing" capacity or for school "improvement" is bad enough.
Obama, who wants us to get out of Iraq before the job is done even though (he KNOWS) the surge worked? How will we look if we cut and run with our tails between our legs? The rest of the world, which Obama seems to care about more than his own country, will laugh at us and then will come to disrespect us. We'll only have to go back in when the Iranians or Al Qaeda takes over.
I'm sorry but your candidate is a terrible man and the idea of him being in the White House, thanks in part to an adoring media and in part to an all-too- willing-to-believe public, is truly frightening.
I admit Sen. McCain is not my favorite choice but I sure like him better than Obama. Sen. McCain was a Navy HERO! And his slogan says it all: COUNTRY FIRST. Obama's is "change." Change is what you'll get alright --- the change from a dollar bill (if you have one) OR change from freedom to control your own life to the govt. controlling your life for you. NOT FOR ME! If for no other reason than all the babies that will be murdered either before or after birth, I PRAY Obama is NOT elected president!

(Does anyone remember the hilariously improper usage of Timbuk 3's "The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades" some twenty-or-so years ago?) They did not even threaten legal action as some others did. It was a civil and justified request. I'm not anti-McCain, but I do feel that he should reconsider the usage of the song.

  • Right, I have no leaning to Obama or to McCain, Im not American, but that does NOT preclude me from having an opinion on this..

Should the person who is running for presidency not adhere to laws that you all have to adhere to? This applies to them both, although it seems to apply to McCain in more instances. They both obviously never read the small print-its printed on every CD in case you forget..
If you can arrest a kid for downloading music from the internet, then the presidential candidates should be LEADING by example and not trampling copyright laws..

They are entering a competition to see who gets to be a leader after all..

In reality the face is irrelevant, chances are whoever gets elected will make mistakes and the whole world will continue to suffer the consequences of the "American Dream"..

The point of the article was that yet again-a man asking for your vote, broke the rules,(why is it so many world leaders do that-a sign that our world leaders arent up to scratch perhaps?) and it was not even his first offence, this is merely another artist in the line of disgruntled musicians who do not want to be associated with a politician..

As for those who cannot understand the musicians point of view-imagine your face plastered all over a poster for a cause you disagree with, would it not bother you?

(If your answer is no-it wouldnt bother me, then I will watch for your appearance on whatever reality show will have you as obviously your thirst for fame outweighs your morals)

From Dreams of My Father : 'I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mother's race.'

From Dreams of My Father:'There was something about him that made me wary, a little too sure of himself, maybe. And white.'

From Dreams of My Father: 'It remained necessary to prove which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names.'

From Dreams of My Father:'I never emulate white men and brown men whose fates didn't speak to my own. It was into my father's image, the black man, son of Africa , that I'd packed all the attributes I sought in myself , the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, DuBois and Mandela.'

Sounds rather racist to me...and these are in his own words, so don't claim this is Republican lies. Not saying I support McCain, but I don't especially support Obama either. Frankly, I don't think any politician can ever be a good leader for this country. I feel a line from Hunt for Red October sums it up nicely: "I'm a politician which means I'm a cheat and a liar, and when I'm not kissing babies, I'm stealing their lollypops."

  • Oh, and another thing, I think any music artist has the right to request a person or group not to use their music. It's their intellectual property and if they don't want it associated with a person or group's beliefs or ideals, or maybe just don't want it associated with anything but the music that it is, that's their right. I do wonder if they could use a cover version of the song however...oh well, that's not really important.

  • THIS IS DISGUSTING! I am officially denouncing myself as a Foo Fighters fan.

John McCain served our country and deserves to use whatever song he damn well pleases. Without men like him we would be living in oppression under the rule of China, Russia, Germany, or any other major power.

SORRY you want to worship the celebrity democratic ticket and are BLIND to reality. But I am officially burning my Foo Fighters cd's and will never attend another concert. I truly hope these fools feel a backlash of this UNIMAGINABLY disrespectful decision.

    • Congratulations, KimberlyG4, for your courage in denouncing Foo Fighters! I agree with everything you said but, sadly, a majority of Americans who support the Democrat ticket are going to have a very rude awakening! Sadly, too, our media backs the Democrat ticket and our country is in for an unmitigated disaster. Stay tuned! And let me lend you a match so you may burn your Foo Fighter CDs! And maybe we can donate some $$$ so the clown pictured in the article can buy a comb, some shampoo and some soap. If there's one thing I really can't stand, it's dirty-looking men! Grosses me out BIG TIME! Anyway, thanks again, KimberlyG24 --- I feared I was the only conservative who ever got on this blog, website or whatever it's called.

  • I know who I'm NOT spending my money on in the future. The Foo Fighters, Jackson Browne, John Mellencamp, and ABBA should be outlawed and denied any concert tours in the future

  • no it doesn't... the Foo Fighters were a group of Show performing Jet Pilots. get your facts straight.
