"The Insider" confirms that McCain will sit down with Letterman this Thursday, October 16.
It's anyone's guess how the men will get along, given recent events. Letterman has expressed his displeasure with McCain repeatedly on his show ever since the GOP nominee canceled an appearance on September 24. In a recent sitdown with McCain, he jokingly told "The Insider" that the next time he sees Letterman he'll have to wear a flak jacket!
The talk show host told his audience that McCain called him to apologize for backing out of the appearance, citing a rush to fly to Washington to deal with the nation's economic situation. But Letterman played a CBS feed that showed McCain preparing for an interview with CBS News' Katie Couric at the time he would have been taping the "Late Show."
Letterman called himself a "patriot" for relieving McCain of his appearance commitment, but reiterated he felt "used," "cheap," and "sullied" -- "like an ugly date."
"Here's how it works: you don't come to see me? You don't come to see me? Well, we might not see you on Inauguration Day," Letterman said.
A spokesperson for McCain explained the cancellation by saying that, due to the economic crisis, September 24th "wasn't a night for comedy," adding that McCain "deeply regrets offending Mr. Letterman."
