Report: Don Cheadle to Replace Terrence Howard in 'Iron Man' Sequel

The Iron Man will soon have a new best friend! Don Cheadle will replace Terrence Howard as the superhero’s best friend, Jim Rhodes, in 'Iron Man 2,' says The Hollywood Reporter.

The paper says Tony Stark/Iron Man, played by Robert Downey Jr., will reportedly have a new sidekick partly because a financial negotiation could not be reached for Howard to play the role.

The sequel will have Jon Favreau back to direct, and both Downey and Gwyneth Paltrow (Pepper Potts) are expected to return and reprise their roles, says the paper.

'Iron Man 2' is expected to smash into theaters in Spring 2010.

  • Terrance Howard is one of the reasons female viewers can enjoy the movie. Don Chedle can not portray the same cool, calm and charismatic role. He is a great actor and was an important factor in the movie. What happened???!!!

    • Cheadle not cool? See 'Crash' for some cool Cheadle. He'll be great and the movie won't skip a beat. It's not about Rhodes, it's about Stark, and Downey Jr has it nailed. The Favereau and Howard didn't get along, according to Entertainment Weekly.

  • Terrence Howard was robbed. He even said that this wasn't about money and that he was under contract to come back but the studio "lost" the contract.
I respect Cheadle but Howard is more appropriate for the role.

  • Don Cheadle is ugly - a complete opposite of what the character of James Rhodes would look like.

Cheadle is a great actor but he doesn't fit the role.
Look at past Marvel movies where the actor didn't fit the role of the character they played -...

  • Ugh... gross. I will not buy Iron Man 2 if that guy is in it, nor will I buy it if Howard has a big role in it. They need to keep the focus on Iron Man and give War Machine his own separate thing.

  • Cheadle is a great actor, but this is disappointing. I think Howard's mannerisms and calm voice really helped even out the movie next to the upbeat and brash Tony Stark. Oh well, time will tell how solid this movie is, but I'm sure Cheadle will do a...
