Ellen DeGeneres Makes New Video PSA Against Gay Marriage Ban

The usually chipper and funny Ellen DeGeneres is getting serious and somber in a new public service announcement, where she encourages California voters to vote against Proposition 8, a ballot initiative that would ban marriage between same-sex couples.

Ellen, who married longtime love Portia de Rossi on Aug. 16, posted the video PSA on her show’s website, on which she said:

“I got to do something this year that I never thought I’d be able to do -- I got married. It was the happiest day of my life. There are people out there raising millions of dollars to try to take that right away from me. You’ve seen their ads on TV. They’re twisting the truth, and they’re trying to scare you. I believe in fairness. I believe in compassion. I believe in equality for all people -- Proposition 8 does not. Please, please vote no on Prop. 8.”

Other celebs taking a stance against Prop. 8 include Brad Pitt and Steven Spielberg, who have each contributed $100,000 to defeat the measure.

  • Die Faggot Bitches. Marriage is between a Man and a Woman. That is the definition of Marriage. You can't start calling an apple an orange, It's still a in apple call it what you want. When two Faggots make vows to each other which they won't keep by the way cos their faggots, it is not called marriage, It's called a Bad Joke. ellen degenerate, is a degenerating Faggot whore. A disease spreading, sick perverted low life scum and anyone who listens to her crap is almost as bad, unless you also a Faggot. The top 6 serial killlers in all american Hstory were male Fags and the seventh was a whore lesbian. Wake up people and see the truth. These sick fags are spreading diseases, murdering innocent people and molesting whoever they get their hands on, men, woman or children. Ellen, even Ellen degenerate given the opportunity Power presumed, would turn any woman she wanted into a lesbian. She is sick.. Bring back the death penalty for Fags.

  • Ellen...before you met Ms. Rossi (and still with your previous partner) I watched you do an hour interview on Larry King. He asked you about marriage and your response was that you didn't feel any need to marry. I can't offer verbatim but I cheered at your your answer...specifically because you offered him the same reason as I have with my partner. Didn't need marriage to be committed "I have my life partner...what more do I need?". Now, I realise there is much more in terms of legacy, financial arrangements and legalities and, to that end, I still don't care for marriage but would be very happy with a legally binding Civil Partnership such as Britain has. In fact, I'd prefer that we here, in the US, take it a step further and allow such a Civil Partnership not only for we in the gay community but those heterosexual couples who also do not find a need for marraige (for any number of reasons). In a State (such as mine) where there is no such thing as Common Law spousal legalities, why should they be left out? However, that is not the point of this comment...my point is only months after announcing you had your life partner you switched...left her for someone else whom you have since married. Now you say that you have been able to do something you never thought you would be able to...but there was a time you never wanted or felt the need. Okay...people change their opinions, maybe you didn't love your previous 'life partner' as you thought you did. But now you've done a PSA for allowing same-sex marriage what are you going to do/say if, supposing Proposition 8 is overturned, and you (or Ms. Rossi) meets yet another partner. Divorce? Yes, I absolutely believe in equality for all. Marriage, in and of itself has not necessarily meant equality for all who have been able to take advantage of it and, with a cynical eye perhaps, as far as I can see few of them are 'til death do they part' these days. So I have to ask...do we want marriage so we can also have divorce and all of IT'S inherent legalities?

  • I love it, the crap these religious idiots believe, like God created Adam & Eve, not Adam & Steve! I guess they also believe that a talking snake talked Adam & Eve into eating from a forbidden tree that opened up their eyes. All you need is an evil witch and you have a Disney story! Oh wait, I forgot the snake is the devil -I can't believe this is the stuff you idoits base your beliefs on.

Where's that talking snake now? I want him to point out to these idiots which tree to eat from so they can open their eyes too!

I'm not gay, but I would never tell someone who they can or can't marry - No on Prop. 8!

    • Religious idiot's, so thats what you call us. Well, I'll tell ya somethin stoopid, you better hope you'r right, cause if your wrong, I would not want to be in your shoes. On the other hand if we so called religious idiots are wrong, well that'll be it, right, we'll just be dead, no gain no pain, but if we religious idiots are right, I have to admit, i'll get a kick outa watchin you'r ass fry in hell and the old Devil stickin a pitch fork up you'r ass for eternity, you know thats a long time ,,,,and as for that ol talkin snake, well you'll meet em someday, and while you'r ass is down there, you'll be screamin a different tune, but in the mean time I'll pray for ya, wheather you like it or not. Can I get an amen?

  • If gays were so sinful, wouldn't Christ have said so. If my memory serves me, there is not one word in the four gospels about the subject. Not so for the scribes & pharasies, those who use the Word of God as weapons to impose their narrow, hypocritical morality on others. To this group he poured his greatest scorn!

  • I've grown weary of Ellen's pleas to vote no on proposition 8. I think it's time to boycott her show in defense of traditional marriage, and for the psychological and moral safety of our children.

  • It's ridiculous that anyone's against same sex marriages. Being gay isn't something you wake up one morning and decide to be, like taking up skateboarding or writing poetry. Why do we persecute people for something that's not a conscious decision? Homosexuals are people too.

You make a decision to kill somebody. You make a decision to molest a child. You make a decision to follow a certain deity. You do not make a decision to love people of the same gender as yourself.

  • I have officially stopped watching the Ellen show. Marriage is meant to be between one man and one woman. There are no exceptions.

  • I dont have any problem with gay people but its not right for two of the same sex to get married. If you want to be gay thats fine but you shouldnt get speical rights. I dont want my kids to think it is ok to be gay and they shouldnt have to see it just like they dont need to see straight people all over each other. We as parents have the right to do what is best for are kids. i would never raise my kids to hate anyone for any reason

  • To love and be loved is life's most precious gift and should be celebrated, honored and recognized by us all. I can't believe that ANY diety would require otherwise. Marriage is a culturally and legally desireable recognition of human love and therefore should be available to ALL who desire it.
