Ellen DeGeneres Makes New Video PSA Against Gay Marriage Ban

The usually chipper and funny Ellen DeGeneres is getting serious and somber in a new public service announcement, where she encourages California voters to vote against Proposition 8, a ballot initiative that would ban marriage between same-sex couples.

Ellen, who married longtime love Portia de Rossi on Aug. 16, posted the video PSA on her show’s website, on which she said:

“I got to do something this year that I never thought I’d be able to do -- I got married. It was the happiest day of my life. There are people out there raising millions of dollars to try to take that right away from me. You’ve seen their ads on TV. They’re twisting the truth, and they’re trying to scare you. I believe in fairness. I believe in compassion. I believe in equality for all people -- Proposition 8 does not. Please, please vote no on Prop. 8.”

Other celebs taking a stance against Prop. 8 include Brad Pitt and Steven Spielberg, who have each contributed $100,000 to defeat the measure.

  • If gays were so sinful, wouldn't Christ have said so. If my memory serves me, there is not one word in the four gospels about the subject. Not so for the scribes & pharasies, those who use the Word of God as weapons to impose their narrow,...

  • I've grown weary of Ellen's pleas to vote no on proposition 8. I think it's time to boycott her show in defense of traditional marriage, and for the psychological and moral safety of our children.

  • It's ridiculous that anyone's against same sex marriages. Being gay isn't something you wake up one morning and decide to be, like taking up skateboarding or writing poetry. Why do we persecute people for something that's not a conscious decision?...

  • I have officially stopped watching the Ellen show. Marriage is meant to be between one man and one woman. There are no exceptions.
