David Letterman and John McCain Bury the Hatchet (Video)

After canceling his "Late Show" interview last month -- leaving David Letterman feeling like a self-professed "ugly date" -- Republican presidential candidate John McCain made his hugely anticipated return to the "Late Show" Thursday night. And on the program, he speculated as to whether Sarah Palin might cameo on "Saturday Night Live"!

At the top of the chat, McCain offered all apologies to Letterman for canceling on him, joking: “I screwed up. But look at all the conversation I gave you.” Letterman accepted the apology and graciously replied, “I’m willing to put this behind us.”

As for the chances of his running mate appearing on “SNL,” McCain ambiguously offered: “I think she is, yes.”

And how does his campaign feel about Tina Fey’s wildly popular Palin impersonations? “Look it’s just part of the political scene,” McCain said. “Tina Fey does a great job. Sarah Palin enjoys it. She understands it’s part of what politics is all about.”

He added that Fey is a “tremendous talent.”

  • Dear Dave: This is history! Today, John McCain is the only major party presidential nominee in U.S. history to have been rebuked, censured or otherwise admonished after a Congressional ethics investigation. (look up "keating scandal" on google....

  • I don't think Letterman is McCain bashing, I think people who think he is are merely insecure about the Senator's pending loss...

  • I agree, "Cops" - i think it's good to get people talking about something more than celeb gossip. it's important to bring politics and serious issues to the mainstream

  • Has it ever occurred to you that there might be MORE important things going on than JUST entertainment? Like real life issues that these people might have to power to fix or make worse??

    • I fully understand that. If Dave Letterman wants to advertise his political lecture series and charge tickets he can do so (and go broke). He makes his cash entertaining. Something he is not very good at anymore.

  • Is it November 4th yet? What happened to real entertainment and performers? All you hear about now is Palin and McCain! I'm sick of it.

  • Kudos to Dave for not handling McCain with kiddie gloves! He gave McCain some heat for bailing on him!

    • Are you kidding? "Bailing on him"? Why do you think John McCain is responsible to stupid David Letterman for anything? Who the hell is Letterman but some washed up has been who hasn't been funny since I was 15.

  • I have loved David Letterman for years, but his constant bashing of McCain and Palin is very one sided. I watch Letterman to be entertained; not to watch him campaign for Obama.

    • I have enjoyed watching Letterman myself, I really don't know why he would be helping Obama, that doesn't seem like his MO.
