CHEEKY US star Katy Perry has taken a tumble while performing at MTV's Latin America Awards in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The I Kissed a Girl singer slipped on the icing of giant prop while performing live, as shocked musicians looked on.

The performance appeared to be going well at first, as Perry greeted another female entertainer emerging on stage from a gift-wrapped box.

But things went south from there, with Perry landing slap in the centre of the enourmous cake, covering herself in sticky pink icing.

She then appeared to slide on the sickly substance, vainly grasping at surrounding musicians for balance before hitting the deck once again.

The mishap comes soon after Perry after confessed to alcohol problems in the past, saying her drinking had been "out of control".

Perry raised eyebrows during her recent visit to Australia when she spoke of her strange attraction to "dirt old man" Bert Newton.
