Ellen DeGeneres: "I Don't Agree" With Sarah Palin's Gay Marriage Ban

Ellen DeGeneres is speaking out about Sarah Palin's support of banning gay marriage in the constitution - a break from running mate John McCain's beliefs.

"I don't know if you saw this, but vice presidential candidate, Governor Sarah Palin, says she's that in favor of a federal ban on gay marriage. Basically wants to change the constitution," DeGeneres says on her talk show, to air Wednesday.

"So if you're wondering...how I feel about this…I don’t like it," she continues. "I don't agree. Maybe it's because I'm gay that I think we should all be equal. But I feel that we're all equal."

DeGeneres adds: "I don't know what people are scared of. Maybe they think that their children will be influenced.

"I gotta' say, I was raised by two heterosexuals. I was surrounded by heterosexuals... just everywhere I looked: heterosexuals - and they did not influence [me]…. I mean I dabbled in high school, who didn’t? Everyone dabbled, ya know?

"People are gonna be who they're gonna be," she says. "And we need to learn to love them for who they are, and let them love who they want to love."

DeGeneres married her longtime love, Portia de Rossi, in a backyard ceremony on Aug. 16. See their wedding photo here.

On Nov. 4, Californians will be able to vote on Proposition 8 - which, if enacted, would eliminate marriage for same-sex couples.

DeGeneres isn't the only celebrity to speak out against the measure.

In September, Brad Pitt donated $100,000 to fight the ballot initiative. He's said he won't wed Angelina Jolie until gay marriage is made legal.

  • To quote Ellen:

"People are gonna be who they're gonna be," she says. "And we need to learn to love them for who they are, and let them love who they want to love."

She couldn't have said it any simpler. The rest of us need to mind our own...

  • If I lived out in CA I would be voting NO on Prop 8! Why can't people just let other people be happy?

  • I believe gays should have the right to marry. Why shouldn't they be allowed to be as miserable as the rest of us. Why shouldn't they have to pay $20,000 or more in legal fees to end their unions.

  • Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are brilliant!! Hahahahahahahaha!! Life of any kind ultimately has little to no interest in homosexuality or marriage. Neither works for them in the end. Knock yourselves out.
