"You can't escape from the fact that it was a 'Titanic' reunion," says Kate, who also got to share the screen with unsinkable 'Titanic' co-star Kathy Bates again too. "We shared lots of 'Titanic' stories and we reminisced a little bit too. It was really fun. I felt just so lucky to be in their company again."
"To have the three of us together it was kind of like a neat coming of age party," says Leo. "It's been 12 years."
Although the film felt like a true reunion, it has a dramatically different premise. Based on Richard Yates' acclaimed 1961 novel, 'Revolutionary Road' is the story of a Connecticut couple who must grapple with a crumbling marriage.
"To me it's about the disintegration of a relationship. It's scary subject matter to take on in a film," explains Leo. "It's about people's ultimate pursuit of their own happiness and striving to try to create a life that they've always wanted, but at the same time they feel like their life's passing them by."
In the years since 'Titanic,' Kate has married 'American Beauty' and 'Revolutionary Road' director Sam Mendes and has two young children, 8-year-old Mia and almost-5-year-old Joe, who call Leo "uncle" more than "movie star."
"They don't know that he's a movie star -- they literally don't grasp that concept," laughs Kate, recounting a time when her daughter saw a picture of Leo in the paper and excitedly proclaimed, "'Mom! It's Leo! He's on the cover of the newspaper! We should really keep this and send it to him because he should know he's on the cover of the newspaper. My god, that's so weird!'"
"To them he's so not a movie star at all," she continues, "[and I don't particularly think he is] either -- and I mean that as a compliment."
