O.J. Simpson was sentenced to up to 33 years in jail on Friday. With parole factored in, he could be incarcerated for as little as nine years, however.


The judge, who said she thought Simpson was both arrogant and ignorant, also ruled that Simpson can’t be released on bail until a possible appeal because she believes him to be a flight risk.

Simpson was found guilty in October of a total of 10 counts, including armed robbery and kidnapping in Las Vegas. Prosecutors said that last year, the disgraced football star rounded up five other men (two packing guns) and robbed two sports-collectible dealers in Las Vegas.

Simpson pleaded his case to the judge before the sentencing saying, "Your Honor, I stand before you today sorry [and] somewhat confused. I feel apologetic to people, the state of Nevada. I've been coming to Nevada since 1959 … and I've never gotten into any trouble."

Simpson explained to the judge that he had no intention of stealing, but rather, he merely wanted to reclaim material that he believed had been stolen from him: "This was the first time I had the opportunity to catch the guys red-handed who had been stealing from my family."

Simpson closed his speech by saying, "I didn't mean to hurt anybody and I didn't mean to steal from anybody. Thank you."



Coincidentally, the guilty verdict in this case on October 3, 2008 came 13 years to the day after Simpson was acquitted of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman in one of the most controversial and public celebrity criminal trials ever.

Simpson was later found responsible for their deaths in a civil trial.
