In between concert dates and red carpet walks, Timberlake has popped up several times on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” decked out in one dorky get-up after another.
So does he just really like playing a dweeb, or is he angling for an ‘SNL’ career switch?
Us Weekly’s Ian Drew says it’s more likely that Timberlake’s old Disney habits die hard.
“There’s still a Mouseketeer inside him that’s constantly wanting to come forward,” Drew said, referencing the star’s stint on “The Mickey Mouse Club’ where he both performed songs and acted in comedy segments.
Meanwhile, Timberlake has become the king of nerdy cameos. Last weekend he donned schlubby overalls, geeky glasses and a dowdy mop-top in a video where he played a supermarket janitor.
The week before Thanksgiving, the star squeezed into a leotard to bust some awkward moves as a klutzy backup dancer in a skit with Beyonce Knowles.
And don’t forget his impersonation of Robin Gibb in a parody sketch of the Bee Gees with Jimmy Fallon and the now infamous (and Emmy-winning) “D— in a Box” routine.
“It’s really who Justin is … he still is that geeky kid,” Drew said, “There’s still that part of him that likes to clown around.”
Pop stars Britney Spear and Christina Auguilera and actors Keri Russell and Ryan Gosling were also part of the cast during Timberlake’s run, along with fellow ‘N Sync bandmate JC Chasez.
If Timberlake is looking for geeky parts beyond the ‘SNL’ stage, we think “Ugly Betty” is way overdue for a new love interest.
