What Kind of Dog Should the Obamas Get?

President-elect Barack Obama has revealed that his family is very close to a big decision. What type of dog will they get to join them in The White House?

Obama tells George Stephanopoulos in an interview with "ABC's This Week" that the girls have shortened the list of choices to two breeds.

"They seem to have narrowed it down to a Labradoodle or a Portugese water hound," Obama says. "So we're now going to start looking at shelters to see when one of those dogs might come up.

Obama also spoke about the girls adjustment to their new schools, which he was pleased to report has been smooth sailing.

"They seemed to thrive," he says. "I'm trying to figure out why it is that they don't seem to be fazed by anything. They just don’t seem to be intimidated."

Barack Obama will be sworn in as president on Jan. 20.

  • If he is going to get a dog why not get a mutt from the shelter instead of a $3000 type dog? Oh, thats right we the tax payers are footing the bill.

  • German shepherd because they are protective and loving and very good with children. They would be a great dog for the president.

  • I think he shoud get them a bottle fed red nose pitbull. To show they aren't bad dogs alot of times it's the owners who make them mean.

  • I've owned both breeds and I would have to say that the Portuguese Water dog is the better breed of the two. It is better from an allergy point of view and is more intellegent.

  • I think the best dog for there family would be a Yellow Labrador because they are voted the #1 dog for a family, They are loyal loving dogs and great protecters.

    • Your lab is a good protector? Interesting, because I will be looking at getting a dog soon and I like the breed but was told they don't make great protectors. Nice to know some labs will protect

  • Why didn't he already have a dog? They already lived in a huge mansion. Why does becoming president mean he suddenly needs a dog? Are they trying to be cute? Or is it a way to bring even more media attention to his perfectly aborable family. (I'd...

  • I would highly recommend a miniature schnauzer. They don't shed, are excellent for folks with allergy problems, and extremely intelligent. We just adopted our second in the past nine years and love them. Our most recent is approximately 7 years old....
