Stevie Wonder Speaks Out for the Blind at the Consumer Electronics Show

Musical legend Stevie Wonder appeared at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to remind electronics vendors to keep the blind in mind when designing the latest sleek and speedy gadgets.

“One thing that’s always puzzled me is how I can have access to some of those great technologies. Our desire has been to be part of these technologies and be more independent.”

Mr. Wonder can use a BlackBerry and an iPod nano (with a speech option to help navigate without vision.) But Mr. Wonder pointed out there has been a proliferation of touchscreen controls on devices without any available accommodation for blind consumers available, which present a bigger hurdle to operate than previous technology. Mike May, the President of GPS maker Sendero Group, summed up the particular frustration with touchscreens developed without accommodations for the blind:

“Ski 60 miles an hour downhill? Yes. Use a flat panel microwave? No.”

“Climb Mount Everst? Yes? Use a touchscreen, no.”
