Paula Abdul reveals that she and Kara DioGuardi used to be roommates!

At the FOX Television Critics Association press tour today, Paula made it clear to the critics that she and Kara are great friends. "I was never quoted that there were problems in hiring Kara. Kara and I have a 10 year friendship."

And the new "American Idol" judge confirmed it, saying, "Back in the day, Paula used to take care of me."

Paula tells the story that about 10 years ago, she was in New York and had missed her plane. She was in Brooklyn, standing outside of the Brooklyn Diner when Kara approached her and asked, "Are you Paula Abdul? My boss has a framed thank you letter from you."

At that time, Kara worked for Mike Ellis, then president of Billboard magazine. Paula asked her if she was an aspiring songwriter and when Kara said yes, Paula asked her to send her demos.

"I earmarked some I wanted for me," Paula recalls. "We became instant thick as thieves. I believed in her so much, I wanted her to have a chance to write with great writers. She is a smart girl. She knows exactly where she wants to go in life. I have been so proud of her."

So Paula invited Kara to come to Los Angeles and stay with her, so she could introduce her young protégé to some of the best talent in the music business.

The two also collaborated on "Spinning Around," which became a big hit for Kylie Minogue. "We have a great history and it bothers Simon Cowell to no end," Paula says.

She also says that Kara was the best roommate she ever had, except for one thing: Kara walks in her sleep. "My white carpet, I would see food ground in" Paula says. And Kara defends herself, "I am Italian, I am hungry."

"American Idol" premieres tonight at 8 p.m. on FOX.
