Action star and martial artist Jackie Chan could be playing a lovable and well-known role in the remake of the 80’s film 'The Karate Kid.'

 

According to The Hollywood Reporter Chan is currently negotiating with Columbia Pictures about possibly playing the role of karate teacher Mr. Miyagi formerly played by the late Pat Morita.

Will Smith's son, Jaden Smith will star in the film as the karate protégé, a role originally played by Ralph Macchio, THR says.

Harald Zwart ('Agent Cody Banks') has been signed to direct the movie which will begin shooting this year in China.

  • i dont understand how remaking this movie can ruin the original...remaking a movie does not mean taking the original and photoshopping new faces over it...it simply means another movie is going to be created...next time you pop in the original...

  • I'll see it only because Jackie Chan is in it. I'm sure he'll make a great Mr. Miyagi, but in my heart Pat Morita will ALWAYS be Mr. Miyagi.

  • Karate Kid (1984) did imitate jackie's 1978 films Drunken Master/Eagles Shadow so jackie is to copy his early classics again. Jackie don't bother do some other projects (not CIA movies which im sick to death of!)

  • mr miyagi was japon, and karate master, jackie chan is china and kungfu master, so opposite eachother, so i quess the movie name might be "kung fu kid" :)

  • Jaden Smith as the Karate Kid? I can see Chan playing Mr. Miyagi, and I liked the earlier ones, but we'll see how a remake goes.

  • I dont mind Jackie Chan being the new Mr. Miyagi, but Jaden Smith? Really? That movie is gonna suck now.

    Jaden acted like a little spoiled kid in The Day The Earth Stood Still, and that pissed me off.
