See More... Days before his inauguration as the nation's 44th president, Barack Obama writes a touching letter to his daughters.

The president-elect and devoted family man was asked by Parade magazine to write his personal thoughts to his girls -- Sasha, 7 and Malia, 10 -- and expresses his hopes for them as he prepares to take over one of the most important jobs in the world.

In the letter, appearing in Parade's Jan. 18 issue, Obama tells his daughters he knows they had "a lot of fun" on the campaign trail the last two years, going to picnics, parades, state fairs and eating "all sorts of junk food." "But I also know that it hasn't always been easy for you and Mom, and that as excited as you both are about that new puppy, it doesn't make up for all the time we've been apart."

Obama writes that his daughters were foremost in his mind when he decided to undertake the biggest political race of his life. "In the end, girls, that's why I ran for president: because of what I want for you and for every child in this nation." He also encourages his daughters to "take up that work" that will make America a better place.

The soon-to-be First Dad ends his letter with, "I am so proud of both of you. I love you more than you can ever know. And I am grateful every day for your patience, poise, grace, and humor as we prepare to start our new life together in the White House. Love, Dad."

    • It is a big deal, being that he is the first African American President of the United States. Maybe you need to stay off of websites that feature President Obama.

  • The letter was very nice and well spoken. Besides being the next President of the United States he also gives the appearance of what a real father who loves their child looks like. I wish he would rub off on others so we can all feel the love from our fathers like he feels for his daughters.

  • I love the fact that we're allowed to see what kind of man he is with his family. We got to see a man with a dream on the campaign trail, but now that the dust is settled, we get a more personalized view. I don't understand why anyone wouldn't want to know what kind of man we elected to run our country.

  • He is a great family man and a good person in general. I was a staunch McCain supporter but I'm really warming up to this family. He'll be a good role model especially for young black man. From now on when we say, "anyone can be President...it's not just a lofty ideal. It's a fact.

  • There was a picture of Obama coming down the steps of his plane, and his daughters were running to those steps to greet their father. That picture touch me more than any other picture of Obama and his daughters, because to me it showed a father so happy to see his little girls and the little girls just as happy to see their Dad. With all the President elect has to deal with, I am sure those girls will keep him together. That kind of love is so important. God Bless the Obama Family.
