Does Someone Talented Enough to Win 'American Idol' Need to Show Up for It?

Such a conundrum also begs the question: what rises to the top of the process that is 'American Idol?" To really attract the most extraordinary talent, one would think the machine that backs the winner must offer a very powerful and effective marketing incentive that is an attractive alternative to signing with a powerful and effective label. The track record of 'American Idol' alums is a bit spotty, but maybe that just reflects the nature of the business.

Season 8 of America's most popular broadcast show is returning to its roots a bit, with more story-telling and less Barnum Bailey side-show. The program became such a force by creating an energetic and surprising live broadcast, with the country gathering 'round the telly, despite the rise of TiVO/DVR, and became a true water-cooler show. This season has attracted a few well known contestants, such as YouTube sensation and former Kon Live Distribution artist Von Smith and former A & M and Geffen Records artist Joanna Pacitti. Vote for the Worst message board is posting the Top 50 of American Idol Season 8 if you want to take some of the mystery out of the prerecorded season [here].
