For Best Actress, Angelina Jolie received a nod for Changeling, Meryl Streep for Doubt, Kate Winslet for The Reader, and Melissa Leo for Frozen River. Sean Penn and Brad Pitt received nominations in the Best Actor category for their roles in Milk and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
In the Best Supporting Actor category, Josh Brolin (son of actor James Brolin and stepson of Barbra Streisand) for Milk, Philip Seymour Hoffman for Doubt, and Robert Downey Jr. for Tropic Thunder. A posthumous nod went to Heath Ledger for his role in The Dark Knight. Taraji P. Henson was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Benjamin Button and Viola Davis for her role in Doubt.
