McDonnell and Farrell started dating last December after meeting at a Dublin club across the street from the gourmet food store where McDonnell worked. Prior to meeting Farrell, she and Knight were “really good couple”, claimed a friend. That ended when McDonnell and Farrell hooked up around Christmas-time.
Farrell met Muireann when he went to a party at a bar in Dalkey, near Dublin, opposite the gourmet food store where she worked.
A pal of John’s said: “They must have hit it off immediately. They began to go out. John was devastated.”
The former altar boy was found dead in February at his home. He had just finished his college exams, and the day before had joined pals to watch Ireland’s rugby clash with France.
A source close to Muireann confirmed she had been left shattered. The friend said: “She is having trouble coping with this.”
John used to work at the Ivory Bar, where she and Farrell met. A pal of the tragic student said: “Muireann worked across the road in gourmet food store Thyme Out.
“She would come across to the bar looking for ice and the pair would chat and mess about.
“He struggled to cope with her seeing somebody else. The fact it was Colin Farrell must have made matters worse. As time passed things got worse for John.”
Grieving friends refused to blame Muireann. One said: “She is a genuine person and a great friend.
“When she was with John she was a devoted girlfriend.
“Nobody in either family is assigning blame and there is no bad feeling towards either Muireann or Colin. John Marc’s death is a terrible tragedy and it is a huge loss to all of us.”
Farrell or his rep have yet to comment on incident.
