'Idol' Recap: Triumph, Tears & Bikini Girl

From standout singers to cursing, crying contestants to the return of "Bikini Girl," "American Idol"'s first round of Hollywood action had it all!

A sea of 147 singers who passed auditions in cities across the country filled Hollywood’s Kodak Theater to try and impress the judges once more.

Before performing, the crop of competing hopefuls were enlisted in the first-ever “Idol” boot camp, where they received special attention from stylists, a glam squad, a vocal coach, and a very special guest speaker: Barry Manilow!

Then the melodic melodrama began. Taking the stage in groups of eight and singing one-at-a-time a capella, the contestants at turns impressed, intrigued and outright irritated the judges. “A horrible song, a horrible performance, really annoying,” Simon Cowell told young Vaughn, who somehow inched by to the next round.

Other notables to advance included the controversial “Bikini Girl” Katrina -- who Simon and Randy liked but Paula and Kara did not -- and Nick Mitchell, whose charismatic, headband sporting alter-ego “Norman Gentle,” Simon dubbed “ridiculous.” Not as successful was foul-mouthed Dennis, who after getting ousted, swore at the judges and stormed off.

At the end of the round, 104 contestants were left standing, but the number will dwindle tomorrow night as the infamous group round begins!
