'Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail' hits theaters Friday, with America's favorite pistol-packin' grandmomma raising hell behind bars. Lara tells Tyler that the new movie had some serious belly laughs, and Tyler responds, "Don't we need that in the country right now? Don't we need to just laugh? We all take ourselves too seriously. Just go to the movies and just have a good time."
In the movie, the always-irreverent Madea gets thrown in the clink after a high-speed freeway chase that leads to some anger management issues in front of the judge. Once inside the big house, Madea makes the rules as only she can and finds herself protecting a young prostitute and former drug addict (former "Cosby" kid Keshia Knight Pulliam). Shot on location in Atlanta, the film also stars Derek Luke, Sophia Vergara and Viola Davis.
The movie also features a cameo by Dr. Phil: "First of all, Robin [McGraw] made Dr. Phil do the scene because she loves Madea, she loves 'Diary of a Mad Black Woman,'" explains Tyler. "Most of it is ad-libbed, and we are just going at each other, but when he told Madea, 'You would have to be crazy to get better,' I was on the floor, man. That guy's funny."
Tyler's also been keeping busy with a pair of smash-hit TV shows: "Meet the Browns," which just received an 80-episode order from TBS, and his popular "House of Pain," itself hitting the 100-episode mark.
Of all his newfound success, Tyler says, "It's one thing to see your dreams come true; then it's another thing to see you be able to make other people's dreams come true, and that's a great blessing."
