Instead, it works by harnessing the natural kinetic energy that a person creates when sitting and steering the PlasmaCar. I had initial concerns that the youngsters would have a hard time learning the specific way that you have to steer to get the car to go, but those worries were quickly put to rest as my son went zooming from our living room to our dining room and then also quickly figured out turning around and going backwards. In fact, his mastery of the skill was kind of impressive. It does require an art to the manipulation of the steering wheel to get it to go how you want it to (especially on a flat surface indoors) and it was nice to see the skill being developed and the thinking skills required to evaluate how you could move it differently to achieve different results.
The assembly was not difficult, and was completed by my husband in roughly 10 short minutes with minimal tools necessary. The Internet rumors that it can scratch hardwood floors appear to be unfounded. I suspect that if you use the toy outside and the wheels become rough and uneven, perhaps that would eliminate its indoor use. For now, we’ll use it indoors in the cold weather and take it outside for good when spring comes.
Additionally, it holds up to 220 pounds on a flat surface (or so the product claims… neither my husband or I top out anywhere near that, so unfortunately this claim was nowhere near tested). And I have to say, while I have no desire to sit on my children’s blinking-light, music-playing toddler school bus, I’ve already logged quite a bit of time on the PlasmaCar, and I think it’s enjoyable to see “mommy” whirling around in child-like glee as well.
Overall, definitely recommended, and a great option for a gift!
