Telling Everyone You’re Smart Makes You Sound Dumb

Do you know people that go, “I absolutely abhor television, I would never think of subjecting myself to the drivel that seeps from that idiot box, blah, blah, ing blah…”? Well, the reason those people are stupid is because currently television is the smartest it’s ever been. We’ve always had PBS, but now there’s also amazing like MythBusters, Planet Earth and Shark Week, all of which are interesting and inventive and—yep—smart. Not watching television because the Real World is on it is like not going to restaurants because dessert is bad for you.

The point is, people who make a to-do out of telling you how much they hate TV are usually not very secure in their intellect—with good reason, mind you. But it doesn’t end at hating television with them. Usually, they will also be interested in telling you how much they read. Whether or not you’re talking about books, these saddies will find a way—no matter how circuitous—to let you know they love to read. Unfamiliar with this behavior? Look no further than Angelina Jolie’s latest quote in People magazine. Keep in mind, the question asked was “What does Brad Pitt find sexy about you?”:

“I could be dressed up in the sexiest outfit for a photo shoot, and by his behavior, he’ll let me know that’s nice, but it’s nothing as sexy as when I’m home surrounded by the kids or reading books, educating myself.”

Wow. And there you have it: Brangelina are so smart that the sight of one another reading books and “educating” themselves is what makes them want to .

Hey, liter-Angie: I do bite my thumb, and it is at you.
