More often then not, when we hear of actors trying their hand at music, we tend to experience an involuntary eye roll. From William Shatner to Minnie Driver, it appears the trend to multitask in Hollywood isn't going to end anytime soon. But just when you've accepted that Scarlett Johansson interpreting the works of Tom Waits is as good as it's going to get, along comes The Bacon Brothers to remind us the crossover can not only be successful, but downright impressive.
On February 13th we had the good fortune to experience The Bacon Brothers live at the YMCA Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore. They performed two shows that Friday night and those who came expecting just another Hollywood novelty act left pleasantly surprised by a solid show of great music that infused everything from classic rock and blues to classical and folk into a powerful, 90 minute set. Those who have followed the 10+ year journey of the band were easily spotted singing along, word for word, to songs spanning the band's five album history. Their latest CD, New Year's Day, was released this past November, and really shows the evolution of the band as whole. Michael and Kevin Bacon are perfectly complimented by the talent and diversity of their band mates, which include, Paul Guzzone on Bass & Vocals, Charlie Giordano on Keys, Ira Siegel on Guitar, and Frank Vilardi on Drums. Their music is a collaboration, not a formula, and their eclectic influences keep their sound intriguing and infectious.

The Bacon Brothers were grateful to their Long Island fans, both the faithful and the newly converted, and spent some time after the show signing autographs (including a few obligatory Footloose posters) and posing for pictures. They may have mingled a little longer, but the appearance of a news crew from ABC's 20/20, questioning Kevin on the Madoff scandal, made it an appropriate time for the brothers to call it a night. But have no doubt, The Bacon Brothers will return to Long Island. And when they do, treat yourself to a night of great live music.
