She dedicated her award to her parents and brother and sister and "everyone who has helped me from the beginning."
As a kid, Cruz said, "I stayed up to watch the [Oscars], and I always felt that this cermeony was a moment of unity for the world because art, in any form, will always be our univeral language." She then said people must do everything they can to preserve it.

Host Hugh Jackman kicked off the show, performing a medley to honor each other five best film nominees. He even dragged Anne Hathaway on stage to perform a Frost/Nixon spot.
The audience gave him a standing ovation.

When he mentioned Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, he cracked: "I don't have a joke for them. I am contractually obligated to mention them five times during the show."
