The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala is like a Cinderella’s ball for celebrities and fashionistas. So why did Sandra Bullock look so glum at the lavish May 7 affair? The usually chatty and charming actress hardly cracked a smile. Her gown was stunning but she looked gaunt in it. In fact, her chest looked as bony as Nicole Richie! Sandra appeared to be at least 20 lbs thinner than last year when she was promoting The Lake House. Sources tell Star that the recent events seem to be getting to the 42 year old star. Sandra is apparently still reeling from the nightmare that took place on April 22, when Marcia Valentine, 45, allegedly went berserk at the Seal Beach, Calif. Home Sandra shares with her husband of almost 2 years, Jesse James. Since the alleged attack, Sandra seems more worried about how exposed her house is, says a neighbor. “You have to pass her house to get to the public beach,” the pal tells Star. “Everyone in the community has been giving Sandra advice, and she says she is going to do something about the security.” All this stress seems to be taking its toll. “Sandra looks thin and nervous,” the neighbor tells Star. “I see her acting more cautious, which is unusual in this relaxed beach community. I can see it’s getting her down.”

Friends tell Josh Drop Penelope

After less than two months after splitting form Scarlett Johansson, Josh Hartnett has found solace in the arms of Penelope Cruz. Friends warn Josh to guard his heart, a close chum tells Star, “He talks about her all the time. It’s kind of scary for me to watch – I fear he could get hurt; how long before Penelope Cruz moves on?”

Penelope is jetting to Spain in July to work on Woody Allen’s latest project, and has dated Tom Cruise, Matthew McConaughey and Orlando Bloom in the past five years! An insider says, “I don’t think she wants to take time off to get married.”

Trouble for Demi & Ashton

Ashton Kutcher is getting fed up with Demi Moore’s demands and complaints about everything from his light social drinking to his sexy young costars, a source tells Star. A friend reveals, “Demi seems very controlling. She likes to tell Ashton what to do, too – stand here, meet this person, do that. She wears the pants in that relationship.” According to a source Ashton desperately wants a baby, and has to deal with the possibility that Demi will likely never bear his baby.

On March 24, tension was brewing between the couple at a ritzy event at a producer friend’s home in Bel-Air. When Ashton accepted a glass of champagne, after Demi refused the offer, “Demi shot Ashton a look that said ‘I’m not drinking, so you shouldn’t either. Ashton gave her a defiant look that appeared to say he didn’t care, and he took a sip.”

Demi doesn’t want him to do anything unhealthy because of their difficulty in trying to have a baby together.

The baby issue is a major sore point for the couple, a source adds, “Demi probably feels horrible about letting Ashton down, and her way of handling the situation is to take out her frustrations out on him.”

Middle-aged Demi may fear that her sex appeal may no longer be potent enough to hold his interest, “she doesn’t want him to do movies with beautiful young costars who might snatch him away!”

“The bottom line is Demi and Ashton love each other. But it’s tough going right now!”

Kelly’s Big Problems

Kelly Clarkson’s new album is in trouble and her love life is in shambles, so it’s not surprising that the unusually feisty singer seems miserable these days. Besides the stress of having to redo several songs, sources tell Star that Kelly’s down in the dumps over her lacking love life and ballooning figure. Kelly is desperate to lose 25 pound before her summer tour kicks off in mid-July and before the release of her eagerly anticipated album, My December.

A source close to Kelly reveals, “She feels pressure from her label, her handlers, and her friends to lose weight. She’s always moaning about how she can’t find a boyfriend and she blames this dry spell on her weight.”

Additionally, executives at Kelly’s label were not the happiest with the songs she wrote and produced herself. Kelly might feel better about herself if she tackled her body the way she approaches her career with consistent hard work. “Sometimes she’s in the studio for 14 hours and the only food she eats is fast food, potato chips, and candy bars.”

Kelly drinks a lot of soda, and hates working out. Those close to Kelly, say the real problem is her low self-esteem. “The way Kelly looks and feels now, Kelly isn’t going to let a man love her, [which is what she may need] to get off this negative merry-go-round.”

Hilary Duff’s Heartache

One month after Hilary Duff’s split with Joel Madden, he hooked up with Nicole Richie and it clearly hurt! Not only did Madden not waste on ay time before jumping in to a new relationship, but he and Nicole have been willing subjects for the paparazzi while making a very public scene together at events. Hilary explains, “We were not a couple who would go out and be seen together. So you do wonder why they do it now when they (Hilary and him) were so against it before.” Hilary questions whether she really knew Madden at all!

Heather Locklear & Jack Wagner: It’s Destiny

Heather Locklear and Jack Wagner first playing lovers on Melrose Place, are now a sizzling pair, creating major sparks off screen!

Locklear’s friend tells Star, “They had a strong attraction on the show, but both of them were married and had families, but they’ve never lost touch. Now Heather’s beaming about what’s developed between them. She told me, ‘It feels like destiny!’” Heather and Jack both split from their ex’s, Richie Sambora, and soap star, Kristina Wagner in 2005. As singles the two reconnected and “began pouring out their hearts to each other.” The friend adds, “Heather and Jack are really comfortable together. They already seem like an old married couple.” The two were seen on March 1st at Beverly Hills eatery Mr. Chow and looked cozy at Jack’s charity golf tournament in Valencia, California on April 24. But still “for the sake of their kids, they’re not playing up their romance just yet.”
