He was initially jailed for seven years in 1974 for armed robbery when he was just 21. However, his sentence has been repeatedly extended after committing several crimes within prison. Most of his time in prison has been spent in solitary confinement.
The film, starring Tom Hardy as the titular character and Matt King, has been criticized by the Prison Officers' Association, saying he had caused trauma to people and that people should not glorify his behavior.
