Teri Hatcher's Mother's Day at the tracks and more

It was off to the races for Teri Hatcher and Emerson Rose, 9, on Sunday. The Desperate Housewives star tells the ladies of The View Friday morning that she and her daughter have been celebrating Mother's Day at Hollywood Park the past four years and Emerson made quite a killing this go-around.

I take my mother, I take my little girl. We get all dressed up. It's our version of the Kentucky Derby. We drink champagne, bring a big box of See's chocolate and bet the horses. [Kids] can't actually be handed or exchange the money, but she bets. She was the big winner. She picked all the winners all day, by, you know, their names, of course, which is how we should all just do it.

Teri also used the opportunity to hone Emerson's math skills.

I gave her a certain amount of dollar bills and she had to divide them up between the races and figure out the odds and stuff. So I made myself believe I was giving her a math lesson.

As for presents, Emerson gave her mom a ring, engraved with "I heart mommy" on the inside, and fashioned a ring holder out of clay to house it.

Never having hired a nanny and constantly going on camping trips in their "olive green, Scooby Doo" V.W. bus, Teri has made no secret of her daughter being her top priority in life and reveals she would love to have more children, something she's been "going back and forth" on for years.

I think I've asked myself and the therapist every question surrounding that and still haven't really been able to come up with an answer. But I don't feel done. That's all that feels clear to me. I think she'd like to be a big sister, but I would never put that on her. I feel like it's my job to figure out what the clear answer is and to make the decision.

The 42-year-old actress also discussed the relentless paparazzi and how she and Emerson turned the cameras on them. As a guest editor for the UK Glamour, she gave Emerson a camera to shoot the paparazzi for one piece.

I did not expect how empowering it was for her, like not in a nasty way. It's just like we pull up at an ATM machine or something and they all surround us in cars and started shooting us and I hand her the camera she just starts walking towards the cars and started shooting them. Since this article came out, they have really laid off and I dunno if it's because of that or I'm just suddenly not hot anymore, but what was important about it was it was really empowering to her.

Because she is raising a daughter, Teri says she's doing her best to protect Emerson from succumbing to image issues and not to feed her "burnt toast," her metaphor for women settling for second best in life and the title of her 2006 memoir, Burnt Toast: And Other Philosophies of Life ($18).

I think you have to teach your child their self-worth through how you behave with yourself.
