Gisele Bündchen: I Treated My Body Like My 'Worst Enemy'

Supermodel and newlywed Gisele Bündchen told Haper's Bazaar that there was a time when she treated her body like it was her "worst enemy."

Gisele is now happily married to football player Tom Brady but five or six years ago her fast-paced life was taking a toll on her. "I was drinking a lot of red wine, smoking a pack and a half of cigarettes a day, and eating cheeseburgers all day. I was treating my body, which is my temple and my best friend, as my worst enemy," she told Harper's Anamaria Wilson.

She continues, "I was almost punishing myself. I was so tired. I was working so much and I was numb.”

Gisele said she got out of her slump by taking six months off and spending some time in her home country of Brazil. "If you are happy, you can give happiness,” she said. “If you don’t love yourself and if you are unhappy with yourself, you can’t give anything else but that.”

Gisele graces the cover of the upcoming issue of Harper's Bazaar hitting newsstands March 24.
