Cooper has been director of creative development for the institute and the film festival's director of programming. He joined the Sundance Institute, founded by Robert Redford, in 1989.
He replaces Geoffrey Gilmore, who left last month to become chief creative officer at Tribeca Enterprises, a New-York based film, television and entertainment company that puts on the annual Tribeca Film Festival.
Gilmore spent 19 years organizing the Sundance festival.
Redford said in a statement Wednesday that Cooper brings enthusiasm and understanding to the Sundance brand and culture.
